Description Holocene European wild horse, Equus ferus ferus. According to genetic analyses of coat colour genes, Holocene European wild horses probably were predominantly black, what is interpreted as an adaption to increased forestation on the continent (Sandoval-Castellanos et al.: Coat colour adaption of post-glacial horses to increasing forest vegetation. 2017). Whether the mane was falling like in domestic horses or erect like in living wild equines cannot be ascertained today. Cave paintings all show erect manes, and all living equines have erect manes. It is well possible that the falling mane of domestic horses was a result of domestication.
Since there are no articulated skeletons or any cranial material that is available from the European wild horse, the body and head is based on Przewalski's horses and primitive European pony breeds.
