Photo was taken with and Leitz Canada R_mount Summicron 90mm F2, at F2 full lensopening

This lens was designed by Herr Dr. Walther Mandler who was responsible for the design of 45 Leica lenses for the Leica M & R mount camera's

First production was in 1970 In the Canadian plant of Ernst leitz Canada , Midland Ontario, and stayed in production for 28 years till 1998, when the APO version was launched. This lens number was fabricated in 1977.

Cleaning out the cupboard last week looking for an adapter, it came out of the box again, after at least 10 years.

Reason is the weight its build like a tank, being a 90mm optically it is surprisingly small, its only 60mm long but 80mm wide, but the weight is well over 1/2 a kilo (more then 2 pounds) and that is limiting for carry it around, it makes the camera nose heavy.

I bought it secondhand in the 90ties for around 250 Guilders at that time when the APO ASPH version came out, and a lot of the 1ste versions R 90mm were traded in. Have tried the second version, and yes its sharper at full opening & more contrast at full opening, making it more clinical.

It misses some of the old school lens design in its rendering, see quote below on the 1ste version (1970-1998).

"It is an excellent portrait lens with a simple optical scheme of 5 lens elements. Its optical scheme includes apochromatic correction (in the final version) и aspherical lenses.

Two out of five elements have a high refraction coefficient, the rest are made of glass with anomalous and partial dispersion. There's no splicing and grouping of the lenses. The lens has high resolution, which does not fall towards the frame edges. Meantime the image formed is very plastic and voluminous.
Contrast varies from medium at open apertures to high at closed apertures.

It produces beautiful bokeh and natural color rendering, while vignetting, distortion and chromatic aberration are almost invisible".
