Description Oh how I LOVE jumping spiders! This is a wild jumper, one of the many, that frequent my porch in the warmer months. She is one of the BIG reasons why I want to up grade my camera SOOOO badly! I did not use a macro lens on this...it was all just the perfect lighting, her size (though small....about the size of my pinky nail but big enough to get a good shot of), and color that made such a clear shot like this possible.
Aside from her fuzzy cuteness, I also love jumpers b/c they are so smart and inquisitive. Here she had noticed her reflection in the camera lens and I think was trying to figure out if it was another spider or not.

I believe she as looking at herself in the reflection of the camera. Unlike other spider species and have poor eyesight, Jumpers can see very well. They have to since they are active hunters....they don't make webs or sit and wait like other spiders do.

Thank you for the complement. They are definitely my fav species of spiders...so cute and I love watching them and how they interact in different situations, whether stalking insects or seeing themselves in a camera lens!

A cute little fuzzy spider!! She is adorable!
And thanks for saying what she was doing when you took the picture...looking at her reflection, sounds so cute too.

Oh she was such a cute little thing. And it was so cool watching her trying to figure out what she was seeing in the lens. All animals including little spiders have so much going on in their lives...its a shame that too many people are so afraid of them and don't even try to just watch them and to appreciate them more.

Heather-Chrysalis In reply to PaganFireSnake [2012-06-11 04:09:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it really is! I feel sorry for those people, they miss out on so much. If only they realized that there was more going on in thre world than just them...

I do think that is one of the problems...so many are so wrapped up in themselves that they walk around with blinders on. Its a shame b/c they are letting so much of the world just go right by them without an even second glance.:/

Very nice capture, especially of that inquisitive expression! Truly one of the cutest hunters there is.
There are few large Daring females in my back yard, but they are on to me. One day i'll get an opportunity to photograph them.

Gotta love wildlife that are photo shy! I'm still working on getting the trust of a few birds and other more skittish animals too. But at least the spiders seem to be ok with me.
Glad you like the photo. I do really like how it captured her expression of curiosity.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to picture-melanie [2012-06-02 00:29:49 +0000 UTC]

I understand some are afraid of them but most are harmless to people, including jumpers. I was actually bit by one a few yrs ago...I accidentally put my elbow down on a table and didn't know the poor little spider was there. All I felt was a little pinch and when I looked the little thing was reared up, defending itself. I felt so bad but it seemed ok and then quick ran off. Other then that pinch I got no other effect...no swelling, no mark...nothing. So at least jumpers you know you don't have to be fearful of. They at least aren't going to kill you if they bite you.

Well thanks for the 'peptalk'... hehehe, yeah I know it. I can 'stand' most of the little spiders now, try to set them free when they enter my house, but how bigger they are, how ofter I see myself freaking out... Unfortunately for them, they won't make it till outside I'm afraid

Jumpers are definitely among my favorite spider classes. This indeed a magnificent shot, especially since you just happened to catch her under ideal conditions! What great luck! Her big ol' eyes are awesome.

Thank you and glad you like it. Yeah I definitely was lucky and she was a pretty calm and tolerant spider...didn't seem fearful at all of me...so she stayed pretty much in the same spot for a while and let me get some shots.

Yeah when you have one that will not stay still if can definitely be a lot harder to get a good shot of it! I got lucky with this little girl. She seemed as intrigued by me and my camera as I was by her and didn't move around much. Did any of yours turn out ok?

SO CUTE. Just not sure I would have the guts to really get in there for a close shot... I just don't want one to jump on my face.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to FriendFrog [2012-05-31 02:13:30 +0000 UTC]

Though I do love them I wouldn't be to keen on them jumping on my face either! But up until now I have been lucky enough for that to not happen...damn it I hope I didn't just jinx myself! But jumpers are thinkers. They aren't like some other spider species that are more instinctive. You can almost see the wheels turning in their heads as they check things out. And I think that could be one reason why one has yet to jump on my face. I think they may actually know better then to do that. At the very least know a human face isn't somewhere they should be hanging out on!

They are pretty brave for such little spiders too that's for sure. And they do seem like they can occasionally have that, "What are you looking at?" attitude!
