Description Ba-Zinga, baby painted turtle. First decent shot I could get of him without him moving! Silly little guy just wants to explore so up until now the only clear photos I could get of him was if I was holding him. But he stayed still like this for a few seconds so got to snap off a few clear photos.

Thank you and glad you like his name. I got it from the show The Big Bang Theory. I was originally going to name him Sheldon, but with him being so young, I can't yet tell if he is actually a "he" or "she". So I thought Ba-Zinga fit better.

What a cutie! I was turtle watching yesterday. Some red-eared sliders and what might be map turtles occupy the lake at which I work. It's hard to tell if the 'map turtles' are just that b/c their shells are typically covered in moss and crap.

I do have red-ears as well and they are pretty in their own right with those red "ears" on the sides of their face. Maps are nice too though I don't have any of those! But the painteds, I think, are fairly close to the top of the prettiest out of them. And yeah I've seen how quite a few wild individuals can be covered in algae and other stuff. But none of mine ever get the chance to grow things on their shells. I make sure I wipe them down at least once a week to help keep their shells free of anything growing on them.

Thank you. You had turtles? What kind? Aside from him I have a few red-eared sliders, a yellow bellied slider, mud turtle and a Hermann's tortoise. The Hermann's and my female red-eared are the only other ones that I've had since they were also babies. The others are rescues from people that didn't want them anymore. I do have photos of them up as well, if you want to check them out.

Yes <3 I used to have two red-eared sliders. I guess I rescued them in a way xD My uncle had gotten a tank from a neighbor in the middle of winter that was half-filled with water and had leaves in the bottom (it was left outside for who knows how long). He put it in the bathtub to thaw out, and a few hours later he came back and the 'leaves' had turned into two turtles! So he gave me the tank and them <3 One of them died about a week after I got them, I think being frozen for so long did something too him. My other one after a year I gave to a guy who has a turtle pond in his living room! He was great with turtles and had a bunch of different types, so I knew she would be happy with him. She got kinda depressed after my other turtle died, I think she liked the company.

OMG how can someone just let two turtle freeze like that!?! Most slider species can handle very low temps and quite a few hibernate in areas that get harsh winters, like in the Northeastern US. But to leave them like that in a tank!:/ That's so cruel! Turtles have to properly prepare themselves for hibernation and I am sure the one died like it did b/c it wasn't properly conditioned. So sad. But glad that one at least made it and sounds like she has a much better life now! Sliders do seem to like the company of others so it is possible that she got depressed when the one died.

Well the man had plans to eat them, so I don't think he cared much about their overall well-being. We are up in Massachusetts, and I have no idea how long they were left outside. I think the guy actually forgot about them. I liked having Shelby but when I met the guy with the turtle pond I knew she would be so much happier there then she would with me. Its all about the animals, and if I feel like one of my babies can have a better life with someone else, then I give them the chance.

If someone wants to keep any animal as a food source that's fine. But that doesn't give them the right to treat them cruelly or abuse them either! I could NEVER bring myself to eat any turtle and the whole idea actually turns my stomach. I'm not a vegetarian but I love turtles too much to even fathom making a meal out of one. But that whole situation they were in is just so wrong on all levels. :/

I felt so bad for the turtles when I found out what happened. But this was the same man who caught the groundhog in the backyard with a large fishing net and ate it, so I wasn't terribly surprised that the turtles had nothing more than a tank with a few inches of water.

OMG That is so nasty...catching a groundhog from the backyard and eating it! Not that I have anything against eating wildlife in general...all of the guys in my family hunt deer, pheasant, etc. Mostly popular wild game. But a groundhog...he sounds a tad bit odd that's for sure!

He does seem to be warming up to the camera, which is a good thing. He seemed to be a bit afraid of it at first, but I think he is realizing it's not going to hurt him and is becoming comfortable with it now. Good think b/c I plan on getting a lot more pics of him!
