References aside, this actually does look like a scene from Twister.

Oops, time to go home!  I grew up in Indiana, so seeing these, while not something that happened every year, wasn't uncommon. You know it's bad when it picks up cars and houses.

PaigeBurress In reply to Kitsuchan59 [2017-04-19 19:37:01 +0000 UTC]

Luckily, most tornadoes stay out in open fields. I have seen tornadoes shred houses, toss large trees, and I have unfortunately seen them kill people. They're almost all bad. It just doesn't seem like it when they're gracefully travelling across open pasture. This tornado in particular had violent motion, but it ate nothing but dirt. Dimmitt was a very lucky town.

Well, I would have been surprised if nobody actually did.
Also, that tornado looks like it has a helictical structure.

PaigeBurress In reply to Larry-The-Beaver [2017-04-19 16:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Yup. It was a very strong tornado, and it had a violent look to it at times.

Larry-The-Beaver In reply to PaigeBurress [2017-04-19 18:01:15 +0000 UTC]

And what did you think about the wedge one, when you had it in front of you? I personally think it could have been extremely destructive if it would have struck something...

PaigeBurress In reply to Larry-The-Beaver [2017-04-19 19:29:57 +0000 UTC]

I have no doubt that it was capable of producing EF-5 damage. It was an exceptionally violent tornado, one of the more violent ones I've seen, and would have been catastrophic if it had impacted Dimmitt instead of churning through the fields west of town.

Larry-The-Beaver In reply to PaigeBurress [2017-04-19 20:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I thought so. You're lucky out there in the Plains. Cities are all surrounded by miles and miles of pure farmaland. Here in Italy we have cities one next to another and if a tornado occours, more than likely, it will effect someone. So yeah, they were extremely lucky in that town...

PaigeBurress In reply to Larry-The-Beaver [2017-04-21 14:11:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Unfortunately, a good chunk of them still find something to hit even in the middle of nowhere, but luckily most are just content throwing dirt around.

Confirmed touchdown.......we have debris.
Very nice shot.
As a storm chaser myself you take care.
Mind the traffic. Have some killed the other day chasing and not looking for the real danger........other cars.
My chaser is marked black and white. Has these cool lights!
I use to work out west.
Seen one hit back in the 90s south of McCamey, Texas.
F5 plus. Ground scouring. Shaved telephone poles at ground level. Tossed 80 ton oil pump jacks like child toys. Put my partners patrol car sitting on top of a 10 foot high road cut. The windows sucked out and the car full of mud. They were okay but really dirty.XD
Killed five and many more livestock who could not flee its path. Measured a mile wide. Hail broke out my cars windows. I wore goggles to keep working. Used the flashlight to drive by till morning.
Seen some others!

Thank you!
We are always careful and pay more attention to the road than anything else. Better to live to chase another day. No storm is worth dying for.
Wow! I still haven't witnessed a true F5/EF-5, but have seen many that were capable of it. It's incredible what wind can do.

Nice to hear.
Happy storm chasing.
I work now in the Fort Worth area.
Still in a black and white and still called out to chase.
