This was drawn after reading other's opinions on whether anime could be considered "real art". It may not be very clear, but my answer is in this picture.
Also been incredibly ill lately. It's turning into a pattern, really. Can't create anything I like unless I'm in some sort of physical pain.

The "is anime art" is a loaded question. And one that will be debated for years. When someone brings that up, i ask if they think American comics are art. If the do, why should a comic from another country be discriminated upon because the style is different? So because it doesn't look like Marvels work, it's not art? The defense i hear a lot is people are just tired of seeing the generic Bambi eyed, L shaped nose, cookie cutter anime girl layout. Ex: [link] (not my kind of show, but this is the style I'm talking about. Generaly, its a Shojo manga style). While i have to agree that i dislike this style, does that kill its worth? just because a majority of artists think that this way of drawing is easy, and anyone can do it, does that exclude it from the art club? I personally don't think so. If we can consider what people call abstract art, then why not this? both take some time and effort. (i personaly am not a fan of either though. lol.) Some abstract work I've seen is just paint splattered on a canvas. And those are hailed all over. But that uses the excuse of color theory, and all that fun BS.
I guess out of all this rambleing i mean to say:
While i don't care for some of the many styles anime/manga comes in, it still took time, and was created with the intent for other people to enjoy it. There for, it is art. That's how i see it anyway.
If a man can take a toilet from a mens bathroom, turn it upside down, sign it and call it art. Then i think we can forgive a bit of an over used anime style.

I agree, wholeheartedly. Especially with the Dada comparison. One may not like the style, but I don't see it as a reason to bar something off from the "art" category. I know many, many people who don't understand or like abstract painting, but would still call it art. I don't see how the anime/manga style works differ in that respect.
And I suppose western-style comics get more respect because they have a classic appeal. Manga and anime has been around for a while, but if you compare it to Marvel's exposure it's still pretty new for the rest of us. Perhaps one day we'll be looking at anime in a different light? But I'm getting off track...
Let me just say, your comment brought up some interesting points, some of which I may use when faced with this argument again. Thanks for voicing your opinion.

Art history and art foundations really forced a lot of the styles i HATE down my throat, and forced me to understand their importance, and why they're celibrated. I still hate most of it, but i have to give props to those artists for their intent. The idea of the marvel comics having that classic appeal, it makes me wonder: in japan, do they frown upon marvel's style, and praise the gigantor, and astro boys of the manga world as their version of a classic comic? Makes me wonder...
But anyway, yeah, if people can defend paint splatered on canvases, and upside down toilets, i can defend manga, damn it. lol.

I know what you mean. But, hey... When you go through an ordeal like art history, no one can say any of that hate came out of ignorance. lol
Hm... It's a curious question. Or perhaps the likes of Marvel are seen as an oddity, like some of our underground comics? I wouldn't be surprised, seeing how readily available and widely distributed Manga are. But that's just my theory, I could never say for sure.

that's awesome - i especially love the little droplet things, it works so well with the thick black lines - especially with the eyebrow. i think it would have been nice if you defined the lips with blue, too, because it's a little hard to make them out as it is.
...plus sky blue/turquoise/whatever is the win.

I see what you mean about the lips. I tried out your suggestion, but with how I drew them, it all ended up too fish-looking for my liking. But, hey! Now I know to think about these things before I ink.
