Description Believe it or not but Lich Cerdrych is among the most subtle of the Lichs of the "Inner Council". Cerdrych shuns metals and ore were armor is concerned since it has a disruptive effect on some of the more complex spells he utilizes in combat. Almost the entirety of his armor as well as large portions of his own body are crafted from the solid bone of a wide variety of ancient monsters.

Lich Cerdrych is a master tactician who refuses to show his face in any given situation unless he has an effective countermeasure for every conceivable threat he might encounter. His plans span centuries of intense thought and calculations. Even in situations where events take a turn for the worst his 800 pound war-hammer "Goth", forged in the belly of a "Greater Abyssal Worm", will surely see him through it. It is cursed with the ability to instantly turn undead any opponent struck by it even if it were only a glancing blow. It has allowed him to survive battles that would have been the end of a lesser Necromancer.

Despite his inhuman strength and nigh limitless knowledge of the arcane and supernatural Cerdrych has actually been incarcerated in the maximum security prison "Infernum" for the better part of 25 years since his defeat in the battle of shooting stars. Though it is widely speculated that his capture was all planed in advance and that he could escape at any time if he so desired.

Infernum is a specially designed prison built to house the most lethal monstrosities the world has ever seen. What is unique about its occupants compared to other dungeons hidden throughout the world is that its prisoners are all immortals of varying degrees. Every conceivable method has been attempted to execute the inhabitants of Infernum or at least all methods that wouldn't also doom the Paladin Capital City resting 7 miles above.

No prisoner has ever escaped Infernum though it is greatly feared that Cerdrych will be the first. If he is truly the master tactician that legends tell tale of then he has chosen to be incarcerated for a specific goal in mind. Sadly there are none alive among the Paladins with eyes so far seeing as to be able to envision what grisly horrors such a terrible goal might bear.

Hm. I like the design of this guy, but I'm not sure about the effect of that hammer. Sure, if he's strong enough to lift the thing, then yeah, he should use it, but instantly turning anything it strikes in combat into the undead, presumably under his control, even on a glancing blow? Really? If that's true, how was he stopped and incarcerated? More importantly, if that's true, why hasn't he simply said "Fuck this noise." and gone on a rampage and turned everything living he could get his hands on into his undead slaves? With an effect life that, what's to stop him? Nothing! There is almost literally nothing I've seen from you that would even come close to standing up to that. I like your work, man, but that seems way over-powered.

Hmm you make some very valid points. I think though that when you consider his calculating/overcalculating nature it would stand to reason that such a person is likely incredibly paranoid, it would stand to reason that he wouldn't want to go all out with world domination because it would make for too many possibilities for attack and betrayal to account for. Being as long lived as he is he is somewhat slow to action thanks to the enormous amount of time he spends plotting/planning.

I'm suddenly reminded of the Dracula novel that I just finished reading yesterday where Dracula spent centuries planning out his move to London and his eventual take over of that new foreign land, but as soon as his efforts were countered he fell back on old habits of retreating to his homeland to plan for his counter strike.

So in a sense its because he has so much time to burn he isn't hasty when it comes to making decisions.

As for his defeat I haven't fully planned out how exactly how it goes down yet, but I imagine the best defense against such a monstrous weapon would be to incapacitate his limbs as quickly as possible.

Oh yeah Aegis class Paladins have always been a desirable base material for making high level undead amongst the Lich but they have never successfully figured out how to make one that wasn't immediately cleansed by holy fire. The blessed nature of their armor automatically burns away their corrupted bodies when turned undead making them next to useless to Necromancers.

I imagine that such warriors could stand against such a monster. Perhaps I just need to revise my idea of the hammer to that it needs to make contact with its flesh to be more believable... that or just say that it was quite a large number of Paladins that fell in battle taking him down. Then again there are also the ancient dragons who are highly resistant to phantasmal energies. I really need to go into further detail concerning their anatomy as well.

Overall though I guess its been a bad habit of mine to make many of my villains and monsters very overpowered. It makes the sacrifices of those who dare to stand up against such horrors all the more noble.

Lol you always conjure up the deepest thought concerning any potential plot holes I might have overlooked. Thank you so much! ^ o^

I suppose. Long-lived beings, living and not, do tend to be very slow to action. And if he is so slow to act because he's still thinking his plans through, then I suppose it makes sense there'd be plenty of living people left. All the better for them if he's very paranoid about counter-attack and betrayal in a total world domination plot.

But that hammer needs work, man. Needing to make contact with bare flesh is a good idea. I'm not even worried about the fact that the thing weighs 800 lbs. You've shown me plenty that could stand up to that, or at least let the person wearing certain types of armor keep going even with broken bones, but that effect just irks the living hell out of me. I can understand wanting to make the heroes of the story that much more heroic by pitting them against the absolute worst of the worst, but come on, there's got to be some way to stand up to it. I don't know, maybe Aegis-class Paladins have special enchantments on their armor that nullifies certain spells and effects used on them by the Necromancers and Liches, and as a result, that's how Cerdrych was defeated in the Battle of Shooting Stars, Aegis-class Paladins, immune to the effects of his hammer.

And I try to. It's not that I don't think you'd catch it yourself or change your mind later, but when I read descriptions like this, red flags go up and I can't help but mention them. So you're welcome.

And on a side note, Katja wants nothing to do with Cerdrych. She's reckless, brave, and a damn good fighter, but if it's an Inner Council Lich or similarly powerful Necromancer, she knows to stear clear. She may have survived battles without special Paladin armors that Paladins have died in while wearing said armors, but she's not stupid. She knows how to leave well enough alone. Doesn't mean she can't know or have worked for very powerful Necromancers or Liches, but she didn't live to have a reputation like hers by throwing herself at any challenge that came her way.

Lol yeah I hear ya... though how can he swing his hammer if he has no arms to swing with? ^ o^

Cerdrych is among the most powerful and dangerous of the Lichs though. the bulk of his tale happens in the third arch though he does have influence of the event in the first arch as well.

The way I envision a Paladin fighting him would be evading the first strike and using the hammers own momentum against itself to bury it into the ground then using it as a leaping point to smash down on his arm with booth feet crushing the the arm while also slicing at his head.

though whatever happens next would probably kill them.

Hes definitely not one to be handled by one or 2 Paladins alone.

Some sort of ancient carnivorous bull... though what skull he decides to wear depends on his mood really. He has quite the selection and each one lends him a different sort of strength in their own way. ^_^
