Description The old farmer gripped the iron pitchfork tight as he exited the inky black of the stairwell. Bathed in the sickly glow of the midnight moon he crept out onto the tower's ruined precipice. There in the ambient night stood the one responsible for shattering his family's peace.

The Reaper's wings were massive, one the shade of onyx the other a blood red crimson. His tattered shrouds billowed in the wind as stray feathers danced about like falling leaves. The tremendous scythe he so effortlessly wielded bore a cruel serrated edge.

Peering into the frigid landscape the Reaper cocked his head slightly acknowledging his visitors presence. Though his grim countenance was shrouded by straggly white hair, the farmer could sense the lich staring deep into his very core despite facing the opposite direction. He raised
his weapon determined to avenge his fallen wife.

"Give her back demon!" He growled. "Give me back my daughter." He gritted his teeth unable to hold back the tears.

A hissing laughter could be heard as the Lich turned toward his opponent amused. His eyes met with the reaper's empty blood red hollows chilling his very soul. It was as though his malevolent aura drained the warmth of life out of every thing around him even the very moon itself.

"Pitiful mortal..." The Lich hissed. His twisted voice echoed in the distance impossibly loud. "Did you truly think yourself capable of standing before the face of death with such tools? You should have mourned your dead and lived what little life you had left while you had the chance."

"Grrrraaaaah!" The farmer lunged at the reaper with his all. The lich cackled amused as he leapt back at the last possible second narrowly avoiding the blow. The man continued his attack launching countless strikes at the deathly figure. He fought with all his passion, utilizing
all the skills he had gained from his harsh life on the frontier.

Most of his attacks however met with loose fabric or air. The reaper had impossibly fast reflexes. His wings granted him perfect balance and agility. His defense honed from over a millennia of carnage and slaughter.

The images of his slain wife and stolen daughter flashed before his eyes as he pressed his assault. Every loving moment of the golden days they had shared together now strengthening his resolve to a razors edge. He screamed with the passion of a thousand warriors as his pitchfork
suddenly sunk deep into his opponent's chest, penetrating the black heart within. Shocked he looked up into the lich's terrifying visage.

The Reaper glared into his opponent unimpressed. "I abandoned such useless things long ago. You have no idea the magnitude of the opponents you face."

The farmer grew pale as the ruins began to shudder from the impacts of something huge. A screeching roar tore the frozen skies asunder turning his blood to ice.

The lich's cackle reverberated through farmers mind. "You never had a chance of accomplishing anything here."

A glowing light raised above the broken walls of the tower as an impossibly huge monstrosity raised its head high into the sky. Dripping with gore and carnage it cackled in vicious joy at the site of new prey.

"Oh God, NO! It's Kul'Nar!!" His grip wavered as all hope drained from his body.

"As we are so will you be mortal. Try not to blink."

In an instant the Lich vanished into the very shadows off the end of his pike.

"What the!!! How... urrrk!!!" His train of thought was cut off by a piercing pain that exploded from his backside. A dull grinding sound could be heard as the scythe tore through muscle and bone as though they were grass. Dark crimson spat from his mouth as his body convulsed in pain. As his vision darkened the ancient dragon licked at its maw eager to feed.

Vicar Mortanis leaned in close to his rapidly fading victim and hissed a final parting. "From Peasant to Prince... all shall face me in due time. Welcome friend… to eternity." The glow of Kul'Nar's blazing eyes were the last he ever saw of the mortal realm.

Haha wow I had to stop and think about who you were talking about for a second it's been so long since I've been able to continue work on developing some of these characters.

It would be a different character, Ben Clayton is part of a side story I still want to do. While not directly influencing the events of Perilous Quest it does take place in its history before mankind took to the stars.

You get 80 awesome points for reading up on characters I thought had been all but forgotten. ^ o^

man I really need to make a new version of these characters it feels so amateurish to me now.

Thank you so much for honoring me so. If you truly want to get better though you should aim for an artist well above my meager abilities. XD I highly recommend Genzoman if you haven't happened across his works yet. ^ .^

Copics are alot of fun though not quite as forgiving as coloring digitally. Though if you get good at the one surely your talents will transfer across mediums.

Sorry for the rilly late replay and thanks again!!

Prisma Colors can get a similar effect and are really useful too but the ones I use are Copic markers.

Their a fairly pricey Japanese brand. Since I got to live there the last 3 years I made darn sure to stock up on them where they are cheap and affordable. ^. ^

I have been considering holding some form of contest to attract more feed back to my works... mebe if Copics were the prize.

CrucifixJEL [2008-04-23 15:50:14 +0000 UTC]

I love the brilliant contrast of colors made in this magnificent...beautiful artwork!

Now, onto the advanced critque as encouraged...

...the blade on the Reaper, looks a bit too much like paper or a very fragile blade. This could be due to the shading used; the trianglular shading...

But if you're going for that rusty look, try to avoid adding too much "rusty effect" because once a weapon is old and fragile, it's pretty much a useless thing other than an ornament or some sort. But that's just my opinion! XD!

You "definitely" know how to shade a scythe, maybe even better than me...but still I want to show you my version...and you tell me what you think...on the "shading"...

[link]

Oh yea, on mine it also applies to the background lighting as well.

IMO, I would desaturate the clouds underneath and near the nose of the behometh-dragon-like creature a bit because they just stands out too much...well it depends on how you want to approach it that is...do you want the background to stand out...or the main characters involved in the scenes...?

But then again, there's also a part where background actually helps the characters...so yea......maybe that's what you're going for...

Other than the fact of fixing the shading of the blade and the contrast intensity of the background (unless this is what you're really going for), it's an awesome work...worthy to my taste! XD!

Wow thank you so much for such an in depth critique!

Yes I am currently still struggling greatly with creating realistic metal effects ;o

Your version gives me some some interesting ideas to use in the future. ^_^

Hmm now if I can only learn to wield Photoshop properly to adapt the colors I've already used.

At this point I'm slowly learning how to enhance my pencil sketches to almost look inked. but color manipulation still eludes me some :\

Lighting is the biggest hurtle I must cross where color is concerned I never seem to be able to get those really great effects others use... my colors tend to be overly vibrant or to clash or blend too much with each other too much.

You seemed to nail down my major weaknesses pretty well though. ^_^()

Thanks a ton for your clues I'll be closely looking at the drawing in the near future to see how I can improve it. =^_^=

sigh still so much to learn. XD

Zombie Dragon. Sweet. Mortanis and Kul'Nar would, in my opinion, make great foils for the heroes, or anti-heroes, even, in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. I mean, in D&D, heroes, anti-heroes, and villains alike all face death at some point, so wouldn't it be something if someone were to face the Reaper and ally themselves?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Paladin-Ciel In reply to SteelSkeleton [2008-04-22 23:35:58 +0000 UTC]

Indeed thats what I think too. ^_^ And even going the opposite rout couldn't the Lich also find themselves to be threatened by such creatures. ^_^

I guess either way they would still be tricky enough to try to ally themselves and gain their favor. ^. ^

Hehe yeah that why Dracula became so powerful in Castlevania, because succeeded he gaining dominance over Death.

I really think that those games should shift away from always battling Dracula and start focusing more on Death's character. ^_^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SteelSkeleton In reply to Paladin-Ciel [2008-04-24 09:16:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think so, too. Death is in more Castlevania games than Dracula himself, after all.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Paladin-Ciel In reply to SteelSkeleton [2008-04-24 10:07:26 +0000 UTC]

Totally and now what with Dracula being redeemed as Soma Cruz death will have to play an infinitely more powerful roll in the future. ^_^ I hope they realize that too over at Konami. Seems things over there are boiling down to the spic showdown of the 1999 battle. I hope they don't run out of ideas after that. XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SteelSkeleton In reply to Paladin-Ciel [2008-04-24 10:35:04 +0000 UTC]

You will remember, though, that Soma Cruz's story is taking place between 2035 and 2036, at last installment of his story, so if they do have a game taking place in 1999, it'll be in the past again. Weirdness abounds...

Paladin-Ciel In reply to SteelSkeleton [2008-04-24 10:58:21 +0000 UTC]

haha yeah I can only imagine what would happen if they try to go much further into the future than what they already have.

Though I think there is a story to be told in the far future too especially were characters like Saint Germain and Chronomage are concerned... The concept of time travel especially.

Like how Castlevania 1's "The Creature" occurring before the tale occurred historically.

Oh yeah have you ever seen the movie Waxworks? It had great potential as a horror movie though they turned it into a cheesy comedy... though I do get Castlevania vibes from it ... must be the mixing of so many classic horror stories in one location. ^_^()

Ima watch that one again right now that you mentioned it. ^_^

Waxworks was a sort of cheesy horror comedy but it had some really great atmosphere and was ever only a short stone throw away from being a truly awesome horror story... if not for all the cheese. ^_^()

Lots of wasted potential I guess... the first one was best though I think you can get both movies on 1 DVD for dirt cheap as most people seem to have forgotten of its existence. XD

SteelSkeleton In reply to Paladin-Ciel [2008-04-30 04:02:29 +0000 UTC]

I'll check it out sometime, thanks. No, you want to talk about horror films with wasted potential... George Romero's Land of the Dead. Don't get me wrong, it was great movie, and the idea of zombies that get smarter and pretend to be alive is a good one, but it left plenty of room for a sequel which George himself has said probably will never be made.

Yes that one did somehow feel like some crucial angle wasn't hit upon properly. Or maybe its that they made it rated R rather than Unrated initially... Hmm now I really need to go back and rewatch that one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SteelSkeleton In reply to Paladin-Ciel [2008-05-03 03:12:29 +0000 UTC]

Heh. Well, I'd like to see a movie taking place after the events of Land of the Dead. Though, did you know that Simon Pegg of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and most recently, Run Fatboy Run, had a cameo as a zombie in Land of the Dead?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Paladin-Ciel In reply to SteelSkeleton [2008-05-03 04:57:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes I saw that... the other zombie next to him was the director of that one too. XD

What I really loveded about the DVD version is that they emphesised something that all the wannabe remakes have either forgotten or completely ignored. That you become a ghoul even if you die without being bitten. (Scene were suicide guy raises and eats his son). Thats what made the Romero movies truly disturbing to me... these days they focus too much on the virus angle and thats a well since beaten to death horse at this point... one probably best lef to the either the Resident Evil series at this point. (the games not the crappy movies)

The 28 days movies at least had some very original additions for that angle. Like how they wern't really dead and the way that they really are beings filled with unfathomable rage.

Hmm Fatboy Run... havent heard of that one... is that going to be another of their genre comedies? I adored the previous two. -^_^-

Oh and we'll get to see him as Scotty in the next Star Trek too .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SteelSkeleton In reply to Paladin-Ciel [2008-05-03 06:50:45 +0000 UTC]

It's Run Fatboy Run, and it's an American comedy in the style of a British comedy. Simon Pegg was in it, yes, but he didn't have too much to do with it's production or direction, like he did with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Oh, really? they're making a new Star Trek Movie and Simon Pegg will play Scotty? Cool, thanks for the info. I did not know that until just now.

And on the subject of Resident Evil, I like the fact how Capcom is always re-inventing the series, and having the enemies be different than the previous game in some way. For example, in the first 4 games (Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 0, we're not countingthe offshoots like Code Veronica X and Outbreak), the enemies were zombies, but they were created from very different sources, but in Resident Evil 4, the fifth true Resident Evil, the enemies were villagers controlled by parasitic organisms. I don't know too much about Resident Evil 5 at this point besides the fact that you play as Chris Redfield. But it really burns me up that they're only releasing it for PS3 and XBOX360 at the start. Knowing them, however, they'll have both Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV on the Wii before a year passes from the initial release of each game, though, it seems to me that they, like so many other third party video game corporations, don't even try to support Nintendo, when Nintendo gave many of them their big break into the video game business. But that's a tale for another time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Paladin-Ciel In reply to SteelSkeleton [2008-05-06 11:25:04 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see so he's more a guest star than anything, so its not his movie per say.

Yeah parasitic organisms is a great approach to a much more original breed of undead I think. ^_^

Yeah I don't see why they even bother to call games exclusives to certain consols these days especially when in less than a year the popular titles are already on all the other systems. :\

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SteelSkeleton In reply to Paladin-Ciel [2008-05-07 03:18:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's not always within a year. Sometimes they finish the game for one or two systems, ship them, then starting on a new control scheme or whatever for the third system, then ship it out. It could take less than year, or maybe more than a year. You may remember that Mortal Kombat Deception was originall shipped for PS2 and Xbox, then almost a year later, after Midway finished updating the controls for the GameCube and adding two exclusive characters, Shao Kahn and Goro, they sent out that version. On the opposite side of the same coin, Capcom said Resident Evil 4 would be a GameCube exclusive, but slightly more than a year later, on a spur of the moment decision, they added a couple new weapons and a new gameplay mode, and released the update for PS2. So it's not always a year, sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less.

And I wouldn't say Simon Pegg is a guest star in any movies, excluding any cameos he may make. Sure, he helped make Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, but in both movies, he was nothing short of the star, if not then co-star.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Paladin-Ciel In reply to SteelSkeleton [2008-05-08 04:10:19 +0000 UTC]

Heh well whether a few months or a few years it still feels annoying when they rerelease your favorite game with more options/levels/weapons/characters on a system you don't own. Or if you do have the system you then have to beat the darn thing 2-5 times to unlock all the new stuff they added in and become torn as to whether you unlock more items on the version you or start over on the new one.

Really though I only own multiple versions of the games that I truly adore like Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and Resident Evil,

Oops I didn't mean to say he was anything less than instrumental to the creation of those two movies... though I didn't suspect he had the same creative freedom in "Run Fatboy Run" that he did on those other films that would warrent buying it just because he was in it, is what I ment to say... I think.

Or maybe I'm entirely wrong since I havent seen "Run Fatboy Run" yet. ^_^()

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SteelSkeleton In reply to Paladin-Ciel [2008-05-10 04:09:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well, I only have the GameCube and PS2 versions of a very few games. Really only Mortal Kombat Deception, because I had misplaced my GameCube copy and wanted to play it; Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, because the only version I could find cheats for was the PS2 versio; and Resident Evil 4, cause I was pissed that they released the game on PS2 when they originally said it was going to be GameCube exclusive AND with more features, no less.

I haven't seen Run Fatboy Run, either. I haven't seen No Country For Old Men yet, but I still intend to get it when I go to Wal-Mart tomorrow. And Super Smash Brothers Brawl if I have enough to accomplish all I hope to with what little money I'm taking.
