Description Long overdue kiriban for ~VioletWolf of her silky rooster, named Buddha. Hence the title! Because I'm clever like that. It might sound a bit silly to some, but I was excited to draw a white animal... it's just so much fun to put subtle tones and shadows in something devoid of pigment. It's even more fun when said subject is a fluffy chicken! There were probably 11 or so colors used in the white feathers alone. YES. (Might I add I use no black? )

This is actually the piece that partially inspired my latest poll on colored pencil brands... As many of you know, I'm a diehard Derwent fan. Yes, you heard me correctly. This was done entirely with Derwents, using a good mixture of the Artist's, Studio, and Coloursoft varieties together on Canson Mi-Teintes paper. Not too shabby.

Oof, I'm going to have to try to catch up on my messages... I'm behind.

Of course if you have questions, comments, etc. I'll do my best to answer.

I thought I fav'd this a long time ago. Anyway silkies are an enormous pain to try and illustrate but I think you did a pretty good job overall.

I adore silkies, I used to have eight myself. Now I'm down to one due to hawks and stray dogs. :c Sometimes with all that poof on thier head, you have to trim the fluff so they can see!

Adorable rooster-compliments to him!

Oh no! Sorry to hear you've just got one left...

I can imagine it must be a difficult life for a chicken that must satisfy their wonderful 'do for the ability to see!

I love the feathers on top of his head and I like how you used orange paper! I've not used orange paper yet, as I'm way too cozy with plain old white or grey tinted!

Thanks very much! I kind of wanted to trick myself with this one. So instead of using a bluish-grey paper, I went for this rather daring shade.

I do really love working on a colored ground, as it forces me to work with things that are not quite in my control.

You're welcome! I think that the orange paper was a great choice! It really adds to the color you've put down, and it looks great!

Chicken!… ? … I had no idea you drew chickens so well.

Beautifully done. The mediums are well controlled as is your lighting and coloration.

And thank you! I could stand to do more lighting studies as well!

Thanks, Laura!

Chickens make such wonderful subject matter, so it's such a shame there isn't more of such art on dA! *sigh*

This one is about 9"x 10".

What a pretty rooster! ^_^ You definitely made him look fluffy and soft. Eleven colors? O.o I counted about twelve over the whole picture, but I'm sure you layered over a lot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to MistingWolf [2010-06-23 06:17:48 +0000 UTC]

Yep! There's probably seven more colors in the comb/wattles/face. And not all of those colors are present everywhere in the white feathers, but there are quite a few layers!

I find exploring different tones and colors to try in white is really helpful, and I learn something every time I try it But my "art" in general needs serious help beforeI can really get much father ^^'

I LOVE silkies, also - I am currently trying to get my mom to agree to get a bunch, as they lay eggs much more consistently than our poor girl does now - we have 2 roosters and one hen, and she just randomly lays throughout the year. Just finished with her one-a-day-at-the-beginning-of-Summer streak ^^

Anyway - love the colors and the pose of this chicken!

Oh my, you even got all that strange lumpy bumpy "brain" texture thing going on above the beak! (I always call them brains because when I was little I thought the rooster's brains were coming out his nose XD)
What a handsome fellow! And a lovely name I can tell you had fun with this one.

Lol! I've referred to them as "brains" too. That texture certainly put me to the test, though! For a while I was certain I wouldn't manage it!

I certainly did have fun with this one. Maybe too much!

Silkies are <3 And this guy is an especially lovely specimen.

I have a question though, if you're not too terribly busy catching up on your messages; I have a real nice set of Derwent Coloursofts (you might have seen the comments I made in the poll, in fact lol). I love them to death, but I've been wondering about the other lines, the Artist and the Studio. What are their big differences? Like color, hardness, etc. I'd like to know, because I'm always hunting around for the perfect combo for colored pencils.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to GreenLadyMonster [2010-06-23 05:54:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Silkies are a very charming breed.

Ah, yes. The Artist's and Studio line are identical in terms of leads. The primary difference is the width of lead: the Artist line has a much thicker lead, whereas the studio line is slimmer and intended to be used for more detailed work. In my area, at least, it can be a little difficult to acquire the Artist's line, as they don't appear to be selling them anymore. Overall, they're a little firmer than the Coloursoft line, but no more waxy.

Hope that was helpful!

GreenLadyMonster In reply to pallanoph [2010-06-24 19:18:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh neat, thanks for the clarification on that! I might need to get me a set of Studio pencils then...

pallanoph In reply to GreenLadyMonster [2010-06-25 19:57:16 +0000 UTC]

I do believe they still sell them. In my area it's been a long time since I've seen any, so I could possibly be wrong altogether. A check on the website would probably prove conclusive, though.
