Description Still on a bit of a hiatus here... Haven't managed to finish anything significant, so until then, I'll not be here very much.
I'm also horribly behind on messages, so I apologize for that.

Okay. Mara the unicorn again.... in color? In Painter?

(Hold on, one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse just rode by outside the window...)

I confess I am not terribly fond of working digitally. It lacks something, at least for me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I don't get the full sense of joy when I'm using a tablet, even if working digitally costs a bit less, haha. But yes, I did try, and this is my first Corel Painter experiment. Just a little portrait, nothing all that special, and it took me FAR too long. Let me know what you think, at any rate... at least this looks better than my Photoshop work!

Corel Painter Essentials (ha), adjusted in Photoshop. Used the gouache brushes, mostly.

Naw, she's gorgeous!!! I love that she doesn't really look like a horse at all - it's more like those old paintings, where the unicorns look like a unique breed of animals.

Ah... let's see. This version was, in a sense, free, since it was part of the software bundle that came with my Wacom Bamboo tablet. So it's the basic version without all the other things that come with the full version.

I've heard it's fairly expensive, but I can't recall how much! I know that if I work at a larger size, that it doesn't like my computer and it lags. (Working on a Macbook Pro, by the way.)

(Bah, sorry, I wasn't all that much help... )

It's just so... versatile! I don't know if half the other brushes work as well for me.

And thanks!

I DO really like the colour choices. The blue eyes and auburn hair work well together with her white fur.
You did good on painter. Though I am with you on the whole digital work thing. I do like it, but there just seems to be something missing...But sometimes it can be fun.
No advise from me; I think she looks great!

Gorgeous use of color! To me, its the most realistic unicorn I have yet to see. Wonderful job and excellent detail.

working on a screen hurts your eyes more than paper. Plus it's all too clean! The undo button is helpful but a digital piece is (in my opinion don't kill me here digital artists) more throwaway because it's just a piece of digital coding. If you have a traditional piece it actually exists tangibly and in my opinion that makes it worth a little bit more-that little bit more permenant.

Plus i like to stick my art up on the wall.....you really can't do that with a jpeg file

PS I love that even in digital you've givin it the painterly look of the traditional

pallanoph In reply to lakerose [2010-03-15 05:01:32 +0000 UTC]

Now THAT is a valid point. We wouldn't want burned out retinas at such an early age, now would we? It's also part of the reason my traditional drawings are on the larger size. That, and digital is too clean, and oftentimes I think it feels oddly plastic. Ah well...

I'm glad this one still looks like a traditional painting, though!

I think what you're missing is the texture that working traditionally provides. Everything is too smooth, too worked out here Like a sculpture almost. I mean of course its good! I just like your traditional work better

I really do love the use of color in this painting though

She's so elegant as ever! I love her mane to death xD Also, here she looks very... wise, I think this is the right word. Very eye-catching and your digital art is real nice.
However I should say that your traditional art makes me more happy. It's just feels more alive. But well, this can be just me.
Anayways, lovely work and Mara is absolutely charming.

Narkya [2010-03-13 17:48:20 +0000 UTC]

She looks... wise. I'm not sure that's what she's supposed to look, once again, but she totally looks wise. As if she had seen lots of stuff and just can't help but smile at our stupidness and weird tries to get things right.

I'm so used to seeing traditional works from you, I didn't even see this was digital until I read your description! Anyway, if you're more confortable with traditional medias, you should stick to them. I would like to try them out, but I'm to shy and afraid I'd screw them up. (Plus, I have no idea how to transport them with my moving around. You have to admit that they take up their space.)

Oh, and if that horseman ever comes back, tell him to stand still long enough for you to draw him, will you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Narkya [2010-03-15 04:56:58 +0000 UTC]

I think you pinned her character down pretty well with that description, though she's also quite condescending in regards to the human race, hehe.

I'm beginning to feel I should simply accept that traditional media is my true calling. Even if they do clutter my tiny apartment!

I'll tranquilize him, if I have to...

Narkya In reply to pallanoph [2010-03-15 11:35:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I think condescending just comes with the age and wiseness. While she can't help smiling, I'm sure she help thinking "they've done that hundreds of times, when will they finally figure out that it's not working?". I'm sure it falls on her nerves from time to time. (But then again, she could teach us, couldn't she?)

Everyone needs more fuzzies!

It is it is! I love my new crazy artist friends, and I've learned that still life's are a lot more intricate than I first thought.

pallanoph In reply to whisperinghearts [2010-03-28 03:09:14 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree!

Good to hear! I think I'd made most of my close friends through MCAD (had fallings out with some, though ) so that alone was worth the experience.

Oh yes... those still life setups can throw one for a loop! I like the ones with skulls, etc. the most, of course.

whisperinghearts In reply to pallanoph [2010-03-30 17:25:22 +0000 UTC]

I think once people are in college they're there because they want to be and therefore are perhaps more honest which makes it easier and better to make lasting friendships. I'm always amazed how far some people come to go to MCAD! One of my friends is from North Carolina!

I love the ones with skulls! I have to say there's a real communication in still lifes I had no awareness of before. Or at least the ones that my prof. sets up. It's pretty neat.

Hmm I'll have to try those brushes. I've yet to find a combo that works for me x_x It feels sooooo weird drawing in painter!
Though I have to give it up to the painter programmers, the way they rendered everything... I SO thought this was traditional. What an illusion!

pallanoph In reply to Ashzoi [2010-03-15 04:49:59 +0000 UTC]

I think the gouache brushes get along with me the best... others are a little weird for my liking, and too heavily textured at times.

You did? Oooh, I'm glad then! *is proud of self*
