Description A memorial portrait for my giant plakat betta, Mucha, who passed away this September after losing a battle with dropsy, while I was on vacation, no less. I thought he deserved a little portrait, since his "copper" coloration was so beautiful in life. There are others I need to pay tribute to, as well.

Caran d'Ache and Derwent colored pencils on Canson black paper, 5x7".

Art (C) April Schumacher. Please do not use without my permission, thank you.

Nice to have something other than boring mammals in the gallery now and again. Even if you may not agree.

Wow such a beauty he was! I'm sorry for the loss. This drawing a good tribute to him! And yeah I agree that drawing fish is somehow really rewarding... had to draw the salmon life cycle lately Β  as my art is usually very, very feline/carnivore focussed.

Fish are, despite their huge differences from anatomy I'm familiar with, insanely relaxing to draw. Even if drawing their heads at any angle aside from profile is SO HARD. Also, they're so colorful! Which is always good fun.Β

And thank you! He was fun to draw, which made the pain of loss a little easier. I just hope I have better luck with my current betta. *crossing fingers*

Yeah indeed- and they are fascinating as well. Yeah that I experienced as well when I drew salmon. Their faces are hard! And indeed, drawing them helps you process the loss better I think. Art is a perfect way to give strong emotions a place. Hope your current fishie gets a bit older then - it's interesting to see that fish also learn to respond to their people. They are often sooo underestimated!

In Polish 'mucha' means 'fly'. Best name for fish ever : D

Beautiful picture!

Ah, I did not know that! I was on a kick of naming bettas after favorite artists for a brief while; he was named after Alphonse Mucha. Β

Thank you!

I thought it might be because of Alphonse Mucha, but still I like the idea naming fish 'fly' :'D

Imbreeding bettas for 7 years. I always loved them and never kept them such places smaller than 20 litre. Β  I Had 7 female and 3 male betta in a 500 litre tank. I kept them with endlers. One day, I just added few molly and guppy. One of the guppies was carrying disease called "Columnaris". All my guppies and bettas died in pain after few days. I never bought betta again.

One of my females looked exactly same with your pretty boy, I understand your loss buddy..Β

Sorry for weak english.

Aaaagh, I'm so sorry! I haven't had a brush with columnaris, but I've heard horror stories on the devastation it causes. Terrible!

I hope someday you can return to the fish hobby, if that is your wish.

I am so sorry for your loss.Β  This is a gorgeous drawing and a great tribute to your fishy friend.Β  I absolutely love the way you did the fins, and the scale detail is just perfect, I especially love the different colors that you used on the scales to create a three dimensional feeling.Β  I love fish very much, and I think it is wonderful to see other animals in your gallery!

He really was handsome, and depending on the lighting and angle, his color was drastically different, given the type of iridiphores growing over the red and white base color. Sometimes he looked silver, sometimes lavender, sometimes... peachy-red-something or other. I had really hoped to make this tribute while he was alive, since I'd wanted to paint him the moment I saw him. Thankfully I had many photos and colored pencils handy.

I'd like to do similar portraits of my other fish, both current and deceased, so this will probably be an ongoing project for me. They're so soothing to draw, and now I have more than betta fish to visit through art. Thank you so much!

I really love the iridescent sheen that some fish have, that make it seem like they change color.Β  But of all the fish I have had, the one I miss the most is my Upside-down Catfish, who I had for 15 years.Β  He was not a pretty fish, but he had a ton of personality.Β Β  Also, Corydoras, which can be both beautiful and playful, are probably my favorite freshwater aquarium fish species.

I look forward to seeing more fish portraits from you!

I feel that, overall, betta lifespans are shortening in general: Years ago, I'd had a betta live with me for 4 years, and that was when I wasn't taking nearly as good care of them. Now they have everything they can want, and they succumb to mysterious illness. It's really quite sad! D:

satalightes In reply to pallanoph [2015-12-01 12:24:27 +0000 UTC]

well that's true but some bettas could have been in the
store you got them from for a long time so they can get older
and developed a illness, beacause there in a small area,
and the people at the pet store might not clean it as oftenΒ too.
I really hat when they don't take care of there pets in the pet
store!!

Yes, he was quite handsome: I have a soft-spot for short finned plakats in general, and that copper coloration! Argh I miss him still. I'm hoping to get over the betta curse with my current betta friend; I feel their popularity has lead to over-breeding, resulting in inferior genes/lack of vigor. (My ability to care for them has grown immensely over the years, part of why it's so painfully frustrating!)

And thank you so much!

AKPEros In reply to pallanoph [2015-11-30 08:01:59 +0000 UTC]

He really was handsome. I used to have a betta myself some time ago. He was a normal red with hints of blue long-finned male. Loved him to bits, but he died at 3 years old, I still miss him.
Yup, I agree with that you can easily get inferior genes these days. I don't have experience with bettas, but my last group of dwarf hamsters lived only between 1 and a half to 1 year and eight months, one of them died a day after I brought him home. One of them had behavioural issues and another had really bad teeth, I also had to take them to the vet a few times for infections. Before that my lowest age expectancy was 2 and a half years, with my oldest hamster reaching a bit over 4 years old. I've never had a sick hamster before this. Lets just say I'm never buying a pet from that store again. -.-
