Description Title... Honestly? I just pick any word.

My pallanoph assassin character Sorstan, appearing yet again with his trademark poker face. However, it could be worse... he could be this instead: So be grateful.

None of the pallanophs from the Teirn tribe (among which he was raised) like him very much, or his brother, Tjardek. They are two awkward halfbreeds, after all. He may appear aloof and cold hearted, but there is more to him than meets the eye.

Initially this was a graphite study that I'd work on during my breaks at work, a more in depth look at the planes of his face, which seem to shift entirely too often. (His head seems to insist on becoming all the more broad and compact from profile view, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.) I didn't feel like uploading just a simple graphite drawing to the pile of uncolored scraps that seem to be cluttering my gallery, so I decided I'd have another go at digital color. I figured it'd be a fun little experiment.

Not bad, considering how uncomfortable, unfamiliar, and inept I am with Photoshop. It seems to be a good, quick way to make a rather polished looking color image, so chances are I might (in the semi distant future, of course) open up commission slots for this style. Just ignore those hideous trees in the background... I know they're awful. D:

Someone please, get these critters out of my head.

Photoshop/graphite.

I don't know if you've addressed or been asked this before, but were you influenced by any animals when you drew the pallanophs? If so, what animals inspired their design? I was just curious

I would absolutely commission a piece like this from you. Zomg. Or rather, any of your methods! My boyfriend will surely growl at me for spending some of my FAFSA money on art, but too bad. Every time you upload something new I just lust over it, haha!

Pfff, I'm pretty sure I owe you art for all the beautiful gifts you've done for me! And... I remember that drawing you wanted me to redline... right? I still have to get that for you! Ack, I'm too young for such a bad memory!!! (Or am I?)

I think if I open up commissions again, I'll make them small or quick things so I don't agonize so much over it. This didn't take too long compared to some of my other methods, since I'm usually quick with graphite, and... yeah, I think I like using Photoshop this way. I need to get better at it!

I love that method, and it really is fun to combine traditional and digital works in such a way
Save a spot for meee!

Also, no rush on the red-line. My computer crashed and I'm scared that I may not be able to work on it much at all anyway D:

I like those trees. They just look upside-down. I also love how much his eyes stick out from his pelt. They just look like a trait earned from somewhere else. Haha, if I make any sense what-so-ever.

Thank you!

I wish coloring came more naturally to me: I always default to drawing. *grumbles*

I'm tempted to upload sketches where he's showing a wider range of emotion. He looks very much unlike himself in those circumstances.

Oh, those ponies... they seem to have infected everyone these days!

KaxantheDragon In reply to pallanoph [2011-09-19 05:09:04 +0000 UTC]

It wouldn't be too hard to color over old sketches since you have photoshop. Just keep telling yourself its a sketch. XD

That would be fun. Even better if there were to be some private 'intimate' reactions with his brother... Like someone tripped and fell and their laughing at each other... etc.

XD Actually I was trying to picture MLP in your style... And couldn't. XD

your art is so amazing! you should totally do a hair tutorial. no matter how hard i try i can't get that kind of detail into hair fur. faving!

I'm not sure how well that'd work, since my method isn't very methodical. I might try to make a tutorial at some point in time, so we'll see.

Ah, he looks so fluffy... and I'm usually not making such comments, but it makes me want to scratch his cheek. I really like his expression, it's very strong.
I think you're doing very well with digital coloring, and I agree that it's similar to your traditional coloring, which I think is a good thing.

pallanoph In reply to elektroyu [2011-09-19 03:11:53 +0000 UTC]

If his life situation were different, and he didn't have his image to keep up or big issues to keep him occupied, he'd totally enjoy a little cheek scratch.

It's sad I'm using graphite as a crutch to make this work at all, but perhaps it's just as well. (For now, at least... there's too much I need to learn about digital.)
