Description Here I am, testing your patience for pallanophs...

This is personal work (clearly), portrait studies of my three assassin pallanoph characters from the infamous novel in progress. I churn out this sort of selfish... spewage whenever I'm feeling the winter blues. Not that you need to know such things, but I digress...

However! The members of the assassin trio, as I call them: Sorstan, on the bottom left, older brother to Tjardek, who you will find to the right. Above is Reivig, entirely unrelated as it were, but a brother in arms to Sorstan before things go awry. (No spoilers to those unfamiliar with my hinted plots!)

Sorstan looks a wee bit over-fluffed. That, and Tjardek seems a hair too auburn. But at least Reivig finally makes an appearance in (revised) color. As far as the "background" is concerned, I wanted to avoid an obvious blood theme. So here you go.

These three have evolved considerably, as I am reminded when I look back at older art... *shudder* At least they are finally beginning to match the image I have in my head.

Specs: Winsor and Newton Artist's watercolor (and just a few traces of gouache) on Canson 100 lb cold pressed watercolor paper, about 9 x 12".

Questions, critiques, comments, etc. are more than welcome.

Sorstan, Tjardek, Reivig, and all things pallanoph © April Schumacher. Please do not utilize any of my images in any way, shape, or form without my written consent.

Haha, thanks! Actually, this cold press paper is really good at letting washes bleed into one another. It's a bit harder to keep the dried layers from smudging back together, though.

Oh pfft, don't be so hard on yourself! Although, I can see where you're coming from; if I'm not doing commissions or some other specific piece of art, I always fall back on drawing personal characters and themes instead. lol

I love the sort of "triumvirate" form you did with the portraits; its a whole lot more interesting than three busts kind of placed haphazardly on the page. I also notice you're getting better and better at detailing very plush fur, as well as rendering it so its more...I guess the word I'm looking for is "substantial."

I've been awful about doing personal work, as it seems to be all I can manage recently. It's turning into a vicious cycle of procrastination and low productivity.

I'd been wondering all the while as I was painting their heads what would be tying them together in the background. Because I knew I wasn't going to get away with just letting them float there!

I'm glad the fur is looking better! For the first hour or so of painting Sorstan's head, I was certain I'd ruined it. Thankfully I kept working anyways!

Hah! That sounds like me currently. However, its one of the best ways I can experiment and keep my skills sharp. After all, I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't want me to use THEIR characters as guinea pigs!

Its a good thing you kept going though! Its really hard to tell how well a picture is going to come out when it's not even half finished, after all.

Love it (I'm a sucker for film poster-like compositions ) My only critique is that the foreshortening on Reivig's muzzle seems odd, like his nose is a square shape.

pallanoph In reply to MalteseLizzieMcGee [2011-03-11 01:16:47 +0000 UTC]

You're right; it does look square. I wonder if I can fix it? Maybe if I bump back his lower jaw some. I think that might work.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Tree of three, hehe. Well, it's a wonderful work, everything looks so harmonic~ I especially like Tjardek, those eyes are absolutely charming!
No need to say that your watercolours skills are impressive (though you need to hear it like, thousands times ), but here watercolours look especially soft and natural. It'd look great as a book cover, I'd definitely buy such a book~
It's always a pleasure to see art from you!

Thanks, dear! It was nice to get back into an entirely watercolor piece for something so detailed. Especially since I've learned a few new tricks.

I have been wondering what should go on the cover of this novel once I'm finished...

Their eyes are my favorite. I think I put too much attention (is that possible?) into my character's eyes in regards to color/personality.

Their noses have gone through so many artistic cosmetic surgeries over the past 4 years that it's ridiculous to see where they've come from. I'm much closer now!

Yep, they will nom on you.

I envy your watercolor skills so much. Someday I hope to have that much patience and control when it comes to fur, so incredible. I also love how subtly expressive the faces are, despite being so inhuman. Even with such slight variation in lips and head position, you can really see that these are individuals with unique personalities. Excellent job on that.

I know how you feel... I usually love winter, but even for me it's starting to feel a bit dragging. Want a day where I can actually sit outside and sketch, but it's been too cold and windy and I'm feeling pretty housebound. :\

pallanoph In reply to teriathanin [2011-03-06 07:00:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh, why thank you very much! I often find myself wishing I could loosen up my techniques more often and define more with shape and shadow than line. It would seem I'm terribly addicted to linework in all of it's forms.

Winter is definitely kicking my butt this year. I am beginning to wonder if it had anything to do with me confidently vowing that it would not get me this time around. Bet it figured it had to rise to the challenge... And I definitely want to go out and sketch, aaaaaugh!

teriathanin In reply to pallanoph [2011-03-09 00:03:29 +0000 UTC]

Experimentation is always lovely! Sketchbooks are made for this. But you are really, truly excellent at linework, and you love it. So don't get too hard on yourself for sticking with it.
Also, sometimes you invest a lot of time on a technique you really think you ought to master, only to realize down the road that you were better off before. X) From experience...

I was just feeling it felt a little bit peculiar next to the other two, but maybe a full body drawing would make him look more realistic. He is rather due for a color makeover.

his is gorgeous! I was missing your pallanophs; I'm glad to see them. It's wonderful to see these three, all revised and pretty. Even if the colors are a little off, it really helps set them apart (that, and we can always tell which is Tjardek, with his mismatched eyes. And Sorstan has that beard... Fluffy!) Your subtle blood theme works well, here. Just enough red, but not too much.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

pallanoph In reply to MistingWolf [2011-03-06 06:05:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm always worried that all of my characters look the same, so it's little studies like these that help me develop their differences further. Aside from those distinguishing traits, of course! Thanks!

Despite the potential evolutions these characters may continue to take, I swear Sorstan will keep his beard, and Tjardek his mismatched eyes. I'm too attached to them.
