Description So this is the final image result of that tutorial that I am putting together! My muse that is responsible for clever titles has left on vacation, so it is simply his name. "Tjardek, Teirn's Assassin" sounded a little clunky and long.

Anyway, to the point. This took me a fair amount of time, but not an unreasonable amount. Over the course of perhaps two weeks? I'm not sure, I lose track of time. I should really be doing other things.

Most will be explained in the tutorial, when I am able to finish it. I only hope it won't be to ponderous and long, and I may have to upload it in sections. We shall see.

Tjardek is, as stated earlier, an assassin. I felt the poor fellow was drastically underrepresented here, and could use a proper portrait. Here he is in a much older piece... [link]
Wow, he's certainly changed, hasn't he? I daresay I've improved considerably, too! Yes, his eyes are two different colors: The far eye is a dark greenish brown, the left a pale blue grey. It's more than a little unsettling.

Tjardek is a very logical sort of character, as assassins tend to be... he is cold, methodical, yet thinks a great deal and has great compassion for his older brother, Sorstan, who commits suicide in despair over his failure: [link] Tjardek's calm demeanor shatters once he discovers this, and he takes one of his dear brother's dewclaws, along with a tuft of fur, as a token and memorial, which he wears about his neck on a piece of twine. There's plenty more for me to say, but this comment is already getting overlong.

Questions, comments, critiques, etc. are always welcome.

Amazing How big are your paintings in general?

I usually work larger than 11x14, average size for my more "serious" paintings are anywhere between 12x20 to 22x30. I'd like to work larger, but don't have the patience sometimes.

This one is 11x 17, I think, I can't remember at the moment. So it's a small one.

You really have improved! Your hair has alot more depth now and your background is definately improved. Who does he kill? How does one hire a pallanoph assasin?

pallanoph In reply to lakerose [2009-07-29 23:01:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm quite glad that I've managed to improve over this last year (and that background is definitely more believable, too... )

He kills other pallanophs, normally those who are leaders of opposing tribes. He is loyal to his lord and carries out his tasks without question. Until he realizes that he's doing... well... the wrong thing. (I just realized how hard this is to explain without having snippets of the novel plot posted, hehe! )

lakerose In reply to pallanoph [2009-08-04 15:36:55 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes i suppose the assasin thing would be quite integral to the plot! I'm really interested in pallanophs....i actually wrote an amazingly long comment on your journal about originality of character species but before i could send it my computer did something wierd and it dissapeared. That was quite annoying actually. The ultimate thing would be if you did a pallanophs of the world map with all the different pallanophs standing in the region they are located. Then we could really compare the differences!

pallanoph In reply to lakerose [2009-08-06 14:53:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh, mine does that to me, too... long descriptions and even entire uploads will disappear in the blink of an eye. (For me, it happens when the internet connection resets itself. )

Fantastic idea, the world map! I've been thinking about it, now I should just go DO it! I wonder if I should reference the older time period for the map (15th century-ish) to show some of the older pallanoph types from the novel that have since disappeared. *thinks*

I like the background, looks great.
I have to say I prefer the old Tjardek though, he has bit more dynamic and isn't so um......ideal? If that makes sense .
How do you pronounce his name by the way? Like 'Chardek'?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to eoghankerrigan [2009-07-20 18:36:22 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps this portrait confined him a bit too much. It seems that my drawings still have more character, if that's an adequate description, so that means I still have a ways to go as a painter. But that's good, now I know something I should really work on! (So yes, your description does make perfect sense! )

It's pronounced like "Tyardek"... the j is pronounced like a y, like in "fjord." (Me trying to be clever with names... and failing mostly! )

But he's not all bad, that's for sure.

pallanoph In reply to Exillior [2009-07-19 16:31:36 +0000 UTC]

He looks unusually fluffy to me... as though he's just had a wash. Then again, for whatever reason, I've always pictured pallanophs as taking pride in keeping themselves well groomed. Wouldn't want that red fur to get dark and greasy, would we?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Exillior In reply to pallanoph [2009-07-19 21:48:59 +0000 UTC]

If I had all this amazing fur, I would keep it muchly clean, myself! Oh dear, greasy. Maybe you could have the odd rather evil (in an uncool way) one who has greasy hair... rather like Snape in Harry Potter (although I think Snape is very cool despite the greasy hair )

Astounding work. That two weeks of work definately shows. I like how he has different colored eyes ^^ Him and his brother must have had the same coats, cause I'm having trouble seeing the tuft of fur he took, assuming it's tied in with the dewclaw. But aside from that, I think this is one of your best so far ^^

Ohhh April, I think this is one of my all time favorites from you. Though he is quite the handsome assassin, he looks quite lovable here :3 Pleasant, soft, kind. I think it's the eyes; those are the kinds of eyes that just pierce right through you to your core, and speak louder than words possibly could.
His auburn coat is gorgeous! Looks like my hair at present, due to many henna jobs Very soft. Very warming... welcoming. Hmmm... I could see that as an advantage on his part, being an assassin and all . And as always, your detail in fur is spectacular! A truly charming portrait

I dear say, this has me completely thrilled for your upcoming tutorial!

I guess we get to see the real pallanoph behind the blades here, eh? I'm glad I'm getting some expression into eyes, it helps if I work on a larger scale, I guess...

Warm glow-y fur... very fun to paint!

Thanks, Cricket! I'll likely be uploading it in sections... Three pages, oh dear...

hehe! Well after looking at your tutorial and watching you paint those eyes step by step, I'm not surprised They are incredibly expressive! Though, I do have quite a thing for eyes as it is so I may be biased

Best tutorial everrrrr. There's not enough traditional tutorials out there!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Ashzoi [2009-07-19 16:25:31 +0000 UTC]

My character's eyes seem to have a tendency to stare in a glassy sort of way, so I tried hard to make him appear serious, but with some less harsh thought somewhere behind the eyes. As if painting a pale eye in shadow wasn't enough to begin with! Eyes are just plain awesome.

No, there sure isn't! I figured since I was getting a few questions about how I was managing to paint fur with acrylic that I'd give everyone a little closer look. Sometimes I worry that people are just forgetting about traditional media... sure, it can be expensive, but I have ways of managing my materials so it isn't all that bad. *sighs*
