pallanoph β€” Tjardek Provoked

Description I have been useless on dA lately. I no longer have anything to say, it would seem. Oh well... Enjoy the silence.

There hasn't been a pallanoph sighting 'round these parts for 2 1/2 months, it would seem. *checks gallery* Thought you could use a little vacation.

Anyway, some novel related work: Here we have Tjardek (an assassin from the story) reacting quite harshly to an antagonistic pallanoph's attack, who likely started the fight over Tjardek's status as a half blood. In Tjardek's mind, it's only fair he take an ear as payment. (Yes. He's tearing off that ear, I understand it's a bit hard to see.)

Bit of a perspective fail in terms of spacial relationships and odd cast shadows, though I tried to push my stagnant boundaries a bit. (Notice there isn't even an attempt at a background. ) We'll roll with it, won't we? Unless you see something I might have missed. It's possible!

Sanguine and sepia contΓ© leads in 14 x 17" sketchbook.

Critiques, comments, questions, etc. are always welcome. I'll do my best to respond.

Art, Pallanoph species, Tjardek, and unnamed 'noph Β© April Schumacher. All rights reserved. And please, do NOT utilize (re-post, trace, recolor, etc.) in any way without my written consent. Thank you.

For such ungulate like mammals/syanapsids (assuming if they're relic paleomammals), they fight like big cats. Say may I ask what group they come from or at least who are they related to? BTW love the intensity with the scarlet pencil shading.

Wow, this looks really vicious! I like it!

And what is the definition for 'half-blood' in this scenario? Half another species, or another family?

Very awesome!

Thanks!

In this instance, "half-blood" refers to his mother and father being of separate tribes. Not that this never happens, (that'd be ridiculous if they kept entirely to themselves, ha!) but in some instances it is quite awkward, as is the case with Tjardek and his older brother, Sorstan. Their mother is of the Teirn (Germanic) tribe, and it is amongst that type that they are raised, yet their father is one of the Andir, whose origins are in Norway. In past times, packs of the nomadic Andirg gave the Teirn quite a bit of trouble. Pallanophs hold some fierce grudges, unfortunately, it's part of their species' mindset.

This is really awesome!
I've only really seen calm pix of Pallanophs, so I like this change in mood. They always seem cool and collected, so I like to see their fighting side

Btw, I love that Tjardek is a bi-eye. And his name is awesome too

Thank you! I do forget I'm still allowed to post wild action scenes, and in fact, I should start drawing anything that shows their more emotive side, or how they interact with the humans in the story. (I need to draw more humans...)

I love his odd eyes, too.

Oh well, I have been useless on this site lately, too.
You sneaky devil you!

Anyway, I love the poses, and how he is tearing that ear off, it looks very effective. The poses are brilliant, and I love the simple colours. For some reason I always love your fur, paws and ears the most.

I suppose my absence wasn't entirely unnoticed...

It's funny you should like there ears, as I always worry I'm not quite doing it right. They're better than I used to draw them, at any rate.

And I'll always like drawing woolly things.

Why suuuure, provided you can exchange it for some of your positive nature! (It's the winter speaking again, we're buried in snow!)

That's a fair trade, isn't it?

Don't worry about that... This winter has been making me feel incredibly clingy/lonely. Ugh, I can't stand it! But these things happen, I guess.

I love the fact that this was drawn with conte. I use it too, but not to the fantastic level you've achieved here. I like the detailing in the fur, and you've done it without smearing the conte like I do.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Starath [2011-02-21 07:51:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I worked from top left to bottom left and then gradually moved to the right so I didn't set my hand on anything finished. That, and a piece of scrap paper under the hand works nicely. Not like I didn't use my eraser for most of it, of course!

Starath In reply to pallanoph [2011-02-21 17:06:22 +0000 UTC]

You are very welcome!

Aha, I will have to keep those techniques in mind the next time I decide to break out the conte.

Conte, now there is a medium I've not used in years. I really like how it came out, and there's a freakishly awesome level of action in this image.

Thank you! I came across some of them in pencil form recently, and thought I'd give them another go. I think I'll pick up a few more of the sanguine variety. Love that color!

I can't say no to action scenes, so every once in a while I oblige myself. Now if only I could pair them with a working background and a full color palette!

The feet came quite quickly to me in this piece, which is... not always the case. I did struggle with that unfortunate pallanoph's face, I'm sure he's still not quite lined up properly.

zephyrwolfen In reply to pallanoph [2011-02-21 17:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Haha, that's good to hear - feet are normally easy for me, as well as eyes, but, rather oddly, I often struggle on ears and tails
Perhaps you did, but it's one of the stand-out features of this piece for me
