Description Oh yes. More sketches. I did warn you, after all.

Though I do heartily encourage critique at all times, I must also let you know that this is likely one of my first serious attempts at drawing a wild boar! So there are most definitely mistakes, and you're more than welcome to point them out. I won't bite. I wonder, though, if a boar can even turn its head so far?

To the point: Here we have a scene involving a pair of pallanophs from the Teirn tribe (Germanic) running down a boar. This type almost exclusively hunts wild boar when they aren't foraging for other foods (as omnivores, they will also eat fungi, berries, and a few herbs). They may occasionally subsist on smaller prey, though this is less common as the Teirn live rather communally in small family units. Hunting parties go forth every few days on such hunts, consisting mainly of males in their prime. Females do not regularly accompany the males when hunting boar, but may partake in their own separate hunts after less dangerous prey, which may consist of deer, or they may accompany their offspring in search of other edibles for gathering. Males of this type are fiercely devoted to their mates, and overall they tend to discourage females from participating in these very dangerous hunts for fear of fatal injury. However, there are exceptions to this "rule." Females of a more fiery nature, for example, may be permitted to join the males in these hunts.

Due to the boars' keen sense of smell, the pallanophs must make use of the breeze and keep downwind, using their stealth to take advantage of their prey's poor eyesight. After a brief chase they leap for the back and hindquarters in an effort to bring down the beast. They then rally around in a circle to strike while keeping clear of the lethal tusks. Despite the speed and agility of the Teirn, injuries are not uncommon!

Just a little snippet of background information for once.

I think you're onto something with the boar's head-turning; it does look a little exaggerated, but it still works. And call me mad, but I really like your pencil sketches, they, especially this, have a brilliant light, energetic quality, not to mention the fact that you're just a really good pencil artist too. That's not to say you shouldn't paint stuff though, you must still do that!

Also; the sense of motion in this is fantastic.

It does indeed! I think it gives just another opposing angle to the drawing, with it being angled that way. Makes the whole scenario more dangerous!

Dawwwww, I'm glad to hear it! Though I will attempt to do more of my painting thing one of these days...

That it does, and exaggeration has been a staple of artists for centuries, so it's all good.

Did you ever finish your Spectrum entry? I can't remember. . . D: If not then that might be a good way to ease yourself back into more painting.

pallanoph In reply to line-melte [2010-07-28 04:32:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes, yes it certainly has!

And I totally didn't finish that Spectrum entry... I've been thinking about it off and on lately, but I've got some book covers commissioned from me that have been taking up a lot of my attention, eeeegh, neglect!

But YES. I HAVE TO FINISH IT!!!! *resolute stance*

line-melte In reply to pallanoph [2010-07-28 11:13:51 +0000 UTC]

I think it'd be a good thing to finish, since it was so impressive, and Spectrum'll be here again soon. But book cover commissions are awesome! Are you getting paid for them?

pallanoph In reply to line-melte [2010-07-29 19:03:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh definitely! I just hope I haven't lost sight of where the painting was headed.

Totally getting paid... hence the panic! But they're going alright, even if I am utterly tired of crosshatching feathers right now...

Hopefully not, but maybe your hiatus has allowed you to see solutions you hadn't previously been able to see.

Awesome! Paid commissions are great, I wish I had some.

Personally, I can't see any mistakes in that boar - that mouth is just exquisite (as much as "exquisite" can be applied to a boar's mouth!)
I'm not really sure if they have the neck flexibility to turn their head around that far, but I'd be willing to suspend disbelief, as I think it only adds to the piece... it wouldn't feel quite the same if he weren't able to directly face the pallanoph. This way he feels like more of a dangerous threat and less like a scared piggy. ;D

And I love the sepia/brown/pink tones to the sketch, as well as the paper texture... it really gives the sketch itself some character.

pallanoph In reply to LancerMoo [2010-07-26 03:12:35 +0000 UTC]

Lol, yes, exquisite is rather an amusing description here.

I thought of that after I'd drawn it up but was so happy with the pose that I thought maybe... just maybe, my watchers might forgive me for it. Ah well, I do like the thought of this boar being a force to be reckoned with.

Oh, good! My scanner definitely dislikes that particular sketchbook, as it's a bit warpy and oversized and the paper is cream and a bit transparent. But, photoshop can help out a bit with that in the end.

I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with the wild boar to be of much help there. But I do know some tidbits on boars in general... They are hard to kill. I've heard stories of when kings go out on boar hunts that they literally have these long spears with a cross guard some feet away built in... In order to prevent the boar from reaching the spear-bearer. Cuz they will literally run themselves through...

My military friend also told me once that he literally emptied his military rifle into one of these fellows until it finally died... at his feet... D: boars=creepy in my opinion. XD

Indeed they are, which, in my view, makes boar all the more frightening!!! These 'nophs are damn bold to make them their main prey!

No joke. They need to get some type of bravery award... Like a purple heart or something...

Himmapaan [2010-07-14 20:01:10 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I think the boar is convincing. Well-judged artistic licence is often preferable to pedantry - which is something many people would do well to comprehend...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Himmapaan [2010-07-15 17:52:30 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh, glad you think so! And yes, I think plenty of people might benefit from knowing that, as I think artistic license is abused plenty.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Himmapaan In reply to pallanoph [2010-07-25 19:16:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's true, though I was thinking of the opposite, in which pedantry fails to appreciate sensible artistic license altogether.

Very ellegant, I like it. I know it's just a sketch, but I might change both the pose of the boar and which way it's head is pointing. It would make it more belivable, in my opinion.

Amazing work April! I love how you've drawn the boar's open mouth, and the expressions of the pallanophs are great - I also adore the sense of action that you manage to put into all your sketches (background information is great too! )

Narufan90 [2010-07-14 03:20:11 +0000 UTC]

no, A wild boar can't turn its head quite that far, though I would like to point out the hind legs, they look smaller then the forelegs, I do believe they should be a bit thicker then the forelegs. Reference

TeknicolorTiger [2010-07-14 03:14:20 +0000 UTC]

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this, other than it being a sketch and not finished. lol The background looks like it could use a bit of filling in; just plumping up some lines, etc. But you said it was a sketch so I guess that's not necessary. The boar is amazing! And I love the action and the flow of movement in this. Your style and the way the scene is set with the two pallanophs flanking the boar in a chase, reminds me of those old paintings of dogs chasing down deer. Perhaps it's the browns in this, too, that remind me of something one might see in an old journal on wild life. Very cool; a very successful piece! <3

ShiiRLH [2010-07-14 02:40:08 +0000 UTC]

I do love the movement. I like how you can almost feel the way your Pallanoph moves and the weight of it's body. However when you look at the boar it has a feeling of floating? it dose not have that same sense of movement and weight. The shoulder seems a little weird. Very good for a first try.
