Description Yet another Inktober installment, I promise commissions are still very much in progress!

Ballpoint (and touches of white gel pen) in my travelling Moleskine sketchbook, this is a portrait of my "winged horse beasties," now tentatively called the Aequis. I don't usually do much with framing in terms of composition, so I took a stab at that here, using the wing feathers to draw attention to that intense face. Still trying to make better use of lighting. (I should get better at finding photos with lighting situations I want to reference. Most of this is just coming from my head.)

Oh! I should note that he/she is not flying, but standing on an unseen mountain ledge. Hence the pose.

I really like the name Aequis, and I just gotta say that these are some of my all time favorite pieces of yours - reading snippits of 'Nophs is a close (Close!!) second, but my all time fave that I always look forward to are these wonderful winged horse beasites.

Very interesting creature! Ahh, I wish I could mix creatures so nicely as you do. I'm sure you studied hard to notice where all the subtle changes would be, though. It really shows.

I particularly like the framing you did; it could work as standing or flying, though, I think.

These guys have gone through a lot of versions to get here: A lot of it was just smoothed over with the convenience of feathers! I'm still working on their mouth and feet. Somehow that's been one of the more tricky parts, to get that look I'm going for: not quite hippogryph, and not too far to either equine or avian side. It'll get there!

Though with people ragging on the concept of more than 4 limbs in a fantasy species, I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time before someone screams at me to take the front legs off.  "C'mon, it's a fantasy species, for fun! Besides, it's got avian scapula behind the mammalian ones!" It's really just a matter of aesthetics, as evolution wouldn't let this beast fly anyway!

I haven't heard anything about people complaining about four-plus limbed critters. They mustn't have a very good imagination, eh? Oh well, their loss!

I think these folks just have my tendency to follow realistic rules, but take it to the ends of the earth. I'm willing to let designs slide if they fit in with the world they come from, and if they work visually.

If it comes to someone revoking my six limbed privilege, I'll just say, "What you're looking for is a bird. " I think the gryphon folks would agree there.

Haha! What a great answer! I'll have to keep something witty like that in mind, just in case.

By the way, thanks a bunch for taking the time out of your busy day to reply to all of my comments. It's totally cool of you. :}

Oh don't you worry, it's the least I could do! I'm also out of scheduled day job work for a while, so I could honestly be busier.

Besides, I like talking to people!

That's awesome! Sorry for the late reply; moving, and we just got our internet back. You never realize just how much stuff you have until you have to move it all. x.x

Hope the weather's okay in the cities. Up north, they're talking snow. I don't want any!

Oh yes, that's the truth about moving! The move I made to my last apartment was a nightmare since I did a lot of the final bits via.... bike. Pedaling three miles through the city with bags of cleaning supplies and odds and ends was like an advanced grocery trip! Luckily I had folks to move the big stuff. This last move was difficult for a different reason, with at least 12 steps up the front of the house and with the aquariums and all. Watery mess, yeehaa!

Good to hear you've got internet sorted. It's weird how you can be physically moved in, but these days it's not home until the internet is set up!

Weather's good so far, definitely cooler, last I heard we're due for the S word this monday as well. I suppose it's time; I was predicting the first would be October 15th this year. Guess I was almost a month off!

That reminds me, I need to pull the last of my kale and cut the brussels sprouts down out of my garden. Final greens of the year! (Hopefully they'll be good!)

Wow, that sounds awkward and must have resulted in much muscle burn; must keep you in good shape, though! I can't recall the last time I biked any good distance myself.... I should remedy that.

Fortunately, I only have one pet to move (dog, almost 10), though he had to get acquainted with the house first. Still getting used to it, but I think he's improving. He's starting to bark more, so I know he's getting settled in.

Sorry about the snow. I just wish this light dusting was all we got! I was also surprised at how late it came. Hoping it'll be a mild winter.

I only get any exercise in the warmer months, though I suppose briskly walking/jogging through ankle deep snow to catch a bus must be something! It's hard for me to get motivation, otherwise.

Good to hear the dog is acclimating! Animals must interpret moving so oddly, I imagine. "This is home now? WHY?"

I can't believe it's already so cold here! And we've got a considerable amount, not in terms of being impossible, but more... undeniably here. The sidewalks are solid ice already. Ice that isn't melting! (It looks much more like December than November!)_

Briskly walking from the parking lot into work is usually what I get. I should do more....

Yeah, everything froze here, too! Ice everywhere! Can't we just skip to May or June? XD

Oohhh this is one of the sorta-not-quite-pegasus critters, right? That you have drawn before? A beautiful,intriguing portrait - seems like she's looking back at someone who interrupted her "the thinker" moment

It is! I had a couple of concepts on tumblr, and their design has changed, but I haven't gotten around to exploring them all that much further. I'm still going for a rather unsettling look, because I guess that's what I like in a critter.

Yes, she certainly does have the look of someone interrupted! Now she's just assessing if the interrupter is edible.

I demand to see these creatures in the future too Regardless of their more or less... deadly nature. xD *Goes to check out* Ok, Inktober #16 is DEFINITELY creepy I love the strong ink work though <3

Poor viewer, they definitely walked in the wrong place xD;;

Oh yes. You will.

"WHO WANTS A TONGUE BATH? C'mon, it's exfoliating!" Say bye-bye to your epidermis and other soft tissues!

*also doubles as an interesting feather grooming tool. Somehow. Actually, they probably do that with their beak like birds. I don't know what I'm talking about!
