Sphinxes aren't just Egyptian; there was a single Greek sphinx. This sphinx guarded the entrance to Thebes and asked all passerbys the famous riddle, "Which creature in the morning goes on four feet, at midday on two, and in the evening upon three?" All who answered wrong were promptly strangled by the sphinx.. I assume with its tail, but who knows? The only person to answer correctly was Oedipus. Humiliated, the sphinx committed suicide.
For serious.
She threw herself off her pedestal and DIIIIED.

It's man because at birth (the morning) they walk on all fours, then during their youth they walk on two legs (at noon), and then when they're old and weak they walk on two legs + a cane (in the afternoon.) :3

I think orginally the sphinxes were greek, and the Egypts just decided that they liked them and PLAGERISED them. Or something.
