That's gorgeous!
I love the colours, so serene and they compliment each other very well.
Parrot, or bird feet in general are hellish to do - you did a grand job!
(apologies for my late comments)

Thanks very much! I'd got used to drawing songbird feet so parrot feet just looked so... wrong
And no worries about the late comments.. I have late replies I need to attend to from October 08 D:

Well, pet dogs are popular... This year I got fewer commissions (mainly because I didn't advertise) but in the end it was 2 dogs, 7 cats, 1 lorikeet and 1 hoopoe.
Definitely a cat year!!

Lol not quite! It was the commissioner's father's favourite bird, she just commissioned me to paint one

I guess their range is spreading! I saw a flock in London once, they live in the parks. Thanks!

lol, parrot feets. :3
I really like the colours in this one. Reminds me of those illustrations in old Audubon books.

Hehe parrot feet are weird XD
Oh, I think I know the books you mean. The guy I painted this for is a bird ringer, so I think going for that kind of look isn't a bad thing. I hope it matched the decor of his home as I bet it had loads of prints of bird illustrations!

Parrot feet are freaky cos they're not like normal dainty feet because they use them in different ways to normal garden birds.
I can't believe you get these flying wild around parts of the UK (down south?) I can remember looking through bird books as a kid and amongst the browns, greys and black colours there was a green parrot! I kept thinking there'd been a misprint in all my books X3

Backwards toes!! Haha I mean I'd just got the hang of garden bird feet, so that's why parrot feet were difficult for me.
And yeah, these guys do indeed live wild in London. The commissioner had me paint this for her husband, as he is the only bird ringer in the country that studies these birds.

Oh, what a gorgeous shade of green! I will say, I think it looks like the branch is going through the right foot, but considering how insane parrots feet are you've done a superb job! I love how intelligent his eye looks.

Pannya In reply to eldris [2009-01-23 09:15:07 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, I see what you mean. It doesn't look so bad on the original because it's larger and there is a bit more contrast on that toe, but it's because I darkened those toes so it's looking like the tree branch colour -.-;

Typthis [2008-12-13 22:48:49 +0000 UTC]
I don't think parrot's feet would be too hard, provided you had a reference. What's much worse are iradecent feathers.
π: 0 β©: 1
Pannya In reply to Typthis [2009-01-25 13:25:53 +0000 UTC]
Ah that was the problem.. I didn't really have a decent reference for parrot feet at this angle so I had to make up some of the feet!
But yeah the iridescent are not well rendered in traditional media unless you have some special acrylic paint or something...
π: 0 β©: 1
Typthis In reply to Pannya [2009-01-25 22:23:20 +0000 UTC]
It doesn't matter what media you use I reckon they'd still be hard. If you did have iradecent acrylic paint then it'd look good in real life but would never be able to be scanned or photographed properly.

Pannya In reply to Typthis [2009-01-25 22:26:04 +0000 UTC]
Well yeah, even real parrot wings don't scan properly. You just can't get that look on a computer screen and even photographic reproductions aren't really iridescent.

well i've done toucan feet if that counts. it wasn't that hard. i have the drawing (done in paint and ink markers) in my gallery. love the way this parakeet came out. i LOVE your skills at drawing and painting animals.

Pannya In reply to boot-cheese-3000 [2009-01-25 15:59:03 +0000 UTC]
Toucan feet are close enough I guess XD It's not that hard drawing from a ref, but I didn't have a decent ref from this angle which is why it was hard
Thanks!

yeah well that's always is a problem which is why you have to use your imagination and other references. still a good job.
