Description Having another attempt at altering the Vue palm trees.
A little more success this time around I think.

Thanks for looking.

Also a spiritual follow-up to my previous image with the separated cats:

E-on Vue used to make this? Love the program and use it a lot myself but still working on making such nice water scenes. Great job.

Thanks again! The palm leaves were modelled externally while still using the Vue palm textures, and the sky in the background is a photo. But yes, it was all rendered in Vue.

These palm trees look great in this context.
I'm hoping for completely updated plants in the next major Vue update.

The whole image just makes you want to be there.

Thanks Penboa, I'd love it if they updated them all too! They did a really great job upgrading the rocks in V10 and I'd like to see them do the same thing to the veg and clouds.

These ones are a lot better! See e-on, was that so hard? in the next version of Vue I expect the default palm tree to look like these, it seems like you didn't even need to change the leaf materials, just how the leaves "behave" in terms of length, flexibility, etc

exactly right Priteeboy, the only change I made to the material was to import the maps into photoshop, quadruple the size, and run the noise reduction filter to give them a nice sharp edge. The textures were quite low quality and usually give a scratchy fuzzy look.

The main change was in the fold of the plane (folded down the middle) and modelling of a simple stalk to connect the leaf to the trunk. When I looked at some palm trees I could see generally the stalk was around a third of the entire frond length, yet the old Vue ones only have an inch long stalk..

The addition of the stalks is definetily the biggest contributor I think. I did notice the default "Mexican Palm Tree" in Vue has actual 3D stalks for its leaves and also has more leaves per-tree, (and a higher average polygon count) Though it's a bit more difficult to work with as the leaves tend to form a more messier and unpredictable habit (and sometimes appear a bit grey in areas) Though I have made a decent palm out of that one too

It's crazy that they haven't added a more detailed palm for the better half of a decade, it really is! I began avoiding the palms when making scenes as they just looked so dated. I really hate seeing scenes where they are the main tree it reminds me of the olden days when you knew you were looking at a Bryce render because it had the same faults as other Bryce renders you had seen.

I'd be very surprised if they updated the installed veg in any upcoming Vue releases in the next few years.
