Description School project. She might be the seductress. She might be the assassin. She might be neither.

If this were the cover of a comic book, would you buy it?

I'm not sure I would, but that's just me...

Great work on the detail, especially the shadow.

Nicely done. (And my take on it was that she is the assassin and used seduction to get to her targets. The painting on the way is an inspiration/example of how to get the job done.)

if this were the cover of a comic book, i would definitely buy it. they say you can't judge a book by its cover, but they didn't say anything about comic books!

oh, and i really like the shadow you put on the wall.

If the point of a cover is to grab interest, then this definitely does its job. There's so much intriguing detail, it certainly suggests a story...besides being beautifully rendered, especially given the difficult angel and perspective. I take my hat off to you

Wow, beautiful work. As a picture itself it's really amazing the beauty achieved, but maybe as a comic book cover wouldn't work 100%: for me the problem is the main character (I assume the hot woman in center) is showed from her back, and it takes out from her some protagonism on the pic. Remember this is only my opinion, don't take this the wrong way, and remember too, your technique and skill is very amazing.

Congratulations

That's a good point; I was kind of feeling the same way about it. I think it works pretty well as an illustration, but doesn't really have the attention-grabbing effect of a good cover. It's a little too quiet, maybe. Thanks again for the compliment

Hudson's class, I presume? I was eternally sick of graphite and perspective by the time I finished, but it was worth it.

I thought at first she was going to use her hair sticks as a weapon until I noticed the knife. The lighting is fantastic, especialy the shadow.

Yes, Hudson's class (of course).

It was definitely worth it. Still think that's one of the best classes I've taken here to date.

I would only buy it if it had latin inside. ^^

Never got a chance to make a comment on this piece. Very interesting.

I would like to add a ditto about the detail painting on the wall. Very happy couple indeed. Though I am not too sure if I want to ask what her right hand is doing or where it is for that matter. >< Great work. I love the details. Be cool to see it in color, though. But I am biased.

That's really good looking. I especially like that it makes me thinking about the content. It looks to me like some ritual. The whole scene looks like an asian interior, especially the window (BTW what's wrong with it? The lines are not straight.) and the woman's coat. But the face of the lady doesn't look asian (but her hair does). I think she is going to fulfil a harakiri ritual. Am I right?
Did you use any reference? I would like to see it!

paperclip In reply to jp-art [2005-03-07 20:33:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the ! It's actually a Roman interior, and the window's...well, it's largely fabricated. I tried to research ancient Roman windows, and they did include panes of glass, but they weren't very straight at all. I couldn't find any actual pictures of a window with uneven panes of glass, so I had to invent one. Everyone gets confused by it, too.

As for reference, I did have a model pose for me, and used a lot of research via books and google image search to get an idea of what I wanted the interior to look like. The mural on the wall was copied directly from a book on Pompeii, I think. I'm not too certain.

jp-art In reply to paperclip [2005-03-08 07:34:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, it's also looking like a roman interior
Now you have told me that it's actually your own composition, so I like your drawing even more, because 1:1 copies are dull (although I mostly make such simple copies myself ).

Oooohhh, I remember this project. I had fun with it. Paul's class was just ubber awesome.

I just love the rendering in this, very nice, but I don't know if I would buy it or not. It's not as striking as some covers can be but it all depends what is inside that counts. SO I always give second looks.

If I had the money to, I would buy the comic Hehehee thats a wonderful drawing and if the artwork inside of the comic was 1/2 as good I would still buy it The Detail put into this is very well done... and everything looks perfect Definately Proffessional quality if you ask me...

hyperrrmouse [2004-06-19 15:31:55 +0000 UTC]

hee, i like the painting in the background. Has anyone else mentioend that? I noticed it almost first, but that might be because i notice 'things' like that. Those two in the painting look happy.

The shot of her back makes her look vulnerable and leads to worries, cause the painting is there (and they could represent the seduction) that she could be the assasin OR we are the assasin (or seeing through assin's eyes) and yah. Also if that's the case, we are seeing through assasin's eyes, perhaps she is unwittingly seducing the assasin.

WEeeOOooo...I'd buy it, but on'y if the interior art was as good as the cover. I HATE it when it has an awesome cover and then crappy interior. I like your pictures

paperclip In reply to hyperrrmouse [2004-06-20 04:38:47 +0000 UTC]

Thankees...and I agree about that. There's nothing worse than picking up a comic because the cover was done by someone you like, and then opening it up and finding out some n00b (or someone ) did the inside. That makes me want to kill things. Stupid comic book companies.

cicatricial [2004-06-18 04:09:21 +0000 UTC]

As if you need any more comments...

I believe she is the assassin, and the woman in the painting is the seductress. Although, the first woman could be both, as metnioned before, and that would be a very successful assassination--a knife through the ribs in the middle of a kiss.

This is amazing, as I'm sure you already know. Keep up the fabulous work.

paperclip In reply to cicatricial [2004-06-18 19:13:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

That's actually a very interesting interpretation. I included the painting because the theme of the assignment was 'seduction and assassins', and I didn't feel that my drawing would be seductive enough without it...but I didn't give any thought to the people in the painting and what role(s) they might play in the story. Now you've got me thinking...

Leave it to the writer to notice things like that, eh?

No, I know exactly what you mean. I love stark lighting and shading in artwork too; I just seem to have... issues drawing it. o.O;

That's actually a good suggestion. Maybe I'll stick this in Photoshop and play with it a bit (as the lazy artist factor comes into play...). Thanks!

amsel [2004-06-16 02:49:23 +0000 UTC]

This is lovely.

I think it would do well as the cover of a book, but not quite as it is now. Perhaps if the darks were darker (if you know what I mean) - and everything looked a bit starker...

Then again, I'm a fan of dark, stark-looking shading, so maybe I'm a bit biased.

Oh, nice drawing

But I don't think it would fit as a cover for a comic book... Maybe, depends on what kind of. Maybe an illustration in a book of some kind, with other similar drawings? I don't know, that's just my opninion...

To me it feels like she's about to do some ritual... Maybe she's doing a "fall-in-love"-thingy?

Anyway; really nice work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

paperclip In reply to Albiona [2004-06-16 03:19:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

That's kind of what I thought too when I finished this: 'It looks more like an illustration you'd see in a childrens' book than a comic cover'...like one of those illustrated fairy tales or something like that.

Kind of makes me wonder what I'm doing trying to be a comic artist, because every time I try to draw something for a comic project or assignment it seems to end up looking more illustrator-ly than anything else... o.O;

Thanks again for your comment!

is that a window on the right wall???? It looks a lil crooked if it is. But besides that, it looks great. The contrast of values between the woman, the shadow and te surroundings work well together. and the eye i drawn towards the knife then the photo and back to the woman again. Very nice drawing.!

Yep, that's an...ancient Roman...window. o.O; I'm not sure if my research came from 100% reliable sources, but apparently they had glass windows in some of the more wealthy houses. I don't know if they looked exactly like the way I drew that one, but I do know that their panes of glass were super-crooked. Thanks again for your comment!

Haha...ah yes, the price. Well, in my (perhaps rather misguided) opinion, charge any more than about $2.95 and the comic probably isn't worth buying.

...Unless of course, Alex Ross or someone did the inside artwork... *_*
