Description This piece is for my third oldest sister. The intention was to make a bowl with a fluted rim, but that clearly isn’t what I got.

I made this piece in the last class. We had 15 minutes left but the teaching assistant said “let’s go” and he said he was going to let me go it alone, but that he would help me if I needed it. It felt great. I felt like I really knew what I was doing. I definitely needed his help, but made significant progress from the first class.

After making the overall shape and moving the piece to the pontil rod, I moved to make the fluting. I was spinning the piece and he told me to spin faster and faster, so I did and it was getting HUGE, so big in fact, that I thought it wasn’t going to make it out of the door of the glory hole, so I stopped spinning and the edge folded. When it happened, there was a collective “AWWWW!” from the other people in the class. My professor said: “Never stop spinning.” I explained my concern about getting gout the door and the teaching assistant said: “ you didn’t have to worry about that”, but I didn’t know and ultimately it didn’t matter. The experience of feeling confident about my actions was more than enough.

Oh, and as a classmate pointed out, it looks like a fish: [link]

Fish bowl, that's rich.

It totally looks like a fish, which kills me as it was not intentional at all.

Even if it was an accident, this still is extremely cool looking because of it!

I know, on both counts. My only thought when they told me not to stop/you shouldn't have worried about it was " NOW you tell me!?!" It didn't matter really as I still like the end result.

It *totally* looks like a fish!

It's so great that you went at this one alone. You really feel like you're owning the process. And although it may not be perfect the confidence that you gained just can't be beat. Absolutely exhilarating.

I learned a ton making this piece and am fine with the end result. I'm going to take a few more classes and am hoping to put those skills to more use.
