Description This is my entry for a "Seasons" contest being sponsored at the=ImagersFractalDDs [link] with each of the seasons being represented using fractals. Mine is a representation of Winter.

This wallpaper is made up of 6 separate 'snowflake script' fractals. The background is 2 of the fractals...making up the ''Cool Sun''. Three make up the ''snowflakes'' and the 6th was a red 'snowflake' treated with the ''heart variation''. These were all *.png transparencies and layered one atop the other with no need for editing, other than placement on the image, and of course, signing the piece in Photoshop.

This is of a size suitable for use as a wallpaper.

View at full size to see the Fractal details at their best!

That's what we have now.....everything is white for a change. I was getting bored with the constant ''brown'' out there and dust whenever the wind blew.

Not much at all.. It's been raining most of the time.. Not good for the winter crops..

You mean to say that you've had a pretty open winter there, too? I guess my aunt and uncle had their white Christmas up north of you.....near Alanson. They moved up there from Bloomfield (sp?) Hills, MI. I have a few cousins and their kids scattered around the state, too. One of my grandfathers hailed from Saginaw and ended up in Staples, MN back around 1900 or thereafter. The other side of the family were all over in Wisconsin...by the late 1800's.

There has been snow in the north but not in this protion of the state.. We get a trace now and then, but nothing like last year..

It was -25°F here this morning. But, the temps should be back in the normal ranges tomorrow with highs in the teens and 20's. But, I don't envy those victims of all that ice to our south in KS, AK, MO, TX & OK. They're even freezing their buns off in CA with all this cold air that has been moving south out of the Arctic and northern Canada.
I think it was 1974 the last time this extreme cold moved down over us and all the way to the Gulf. A fellow I knew worked in oil exploration and was telling me about having to break through ice in the bayous in Louisianna that year. If I remember correctly, I think that was the year that it snowed in Miami, FL. The temperature here hit a record low of -42°F on the 12th of January. I remember some homes that used Propane for heating that were out on the open prairie had problems with the fuel gelling up. It was one heck of a cold snap... We've been spoiled these last 5 years or so.

Me too...brrrrr. But, temps are supposed to start getting back to normal tomorrow or wednesday. I remember some winters where the minus temps went on for weeks. Those were some loooong winters...or so it seemed. It was tough walking across campus trying to make it to the next class.....lots of zigzag trips through buildings along the way to try to keep warm on those windy days. No fun! I'm sure glad I'm not down south with those ice storms and no power.

Michigan is known for the snow.. I can't ever rememeber a winter this bare.. I can remember digging tunnels through drifts to get to the barn door.. My sisters and I built igloos.. We had our first snow in October and I was sure it was going to be a lovely winter.. Then it all melted and none since till today.. By this time every year we usually have at least three feet accumilation. It can get pretty cold here too but not as cold as where you are.. The lakes protect us from that..

patrx In reply to Ann-McLaren [2007-01-16 16:51:49 +0000 UTC]

I've heard about Michigan's snow....especially up north on the peninsula. Back in '97 we set a record for snowfall here with 104'', which is about 70'' more than our average. Wehad snow on the ground into May that year. My neighbors' kids built themselves igloos out of the snowbanks and 'forts'...LOL The snowmobilers had lots of fun that year, too.

Ann-McLaren In reply to patrx [2007-01-16 17:14:27 +0000 UTC]

That is an enormous amount of snow.. We have about 4 inches now..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

patrx In reply to Ann-McLaren [2007-01-16 17:53:58 +0000 UTC]

Yup...but we had melts along the way, so we could handle it. I think we could use another year like that to fill up the stock dams and replenish the soil moisture. I don't think we've had much more than 15'' of snow so far this year.

Temps are to be in the teens and 20's for the week here and light snow is in the forecast. My joints don't like the cold. In fact, I like the heat here, but it's a dry heat...low humidity...which makes it tolerable. It's the combo of high humidity and heat that I have trouble with.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ann-McLaren In reply to patrx [2007-01-17 23:18:47 +0000 UTC]

That's what we have in Michigan.. It's mostly swamps and lakes with a very high water table.. Always very high humidity.... I can stand the heat if it's dry but not this opressive stuff we have here.. I spend most of my summers inside, only going out early in the morning.. Luckily we have central air.. I'm still stiff and sore from shoveling snow yesterday.. Looks like the snow is due again tomorrow..

We didn't get much of anything here...just a few flakes before the system blew out and cleared off. Nice and sunny here today with temps in the teens.

patrx In reply to Ann-McLaren [2007-01-19 17:29:00 +0000 UTC]

We're expecting upper 20's today...nice and sunny, too. But temps are supposed to reach the lower 30's tomorrow and maybe snow, too. Temps depend upon where they take the temperature... I've seen a 5-10° difference between the airport on the south side and higher temps up on the hill to the north end of town here and another temperature downtown. I've been tempted to build a temperature sensor housing and get one of those remote sensors.

Ann-McLaren In reply to patrx [2007-01-19 17:45:27 +0000 UTC]

The offical temp forhere is taken at teh airport.. 20 miles away, near Lansing.. It's always much colder here.. I have a good outdoor thermometer and like to know what the temp is where I am..

patrx In reply to Ann-McLaren [2007-01-19 18:58:14 +0000 UTC]

You get around all those buildings and pavement, the temps are bound to be higher. We're 11 miles east of the airport and our temps are different, too, out here on the prairie.

Ther are about 8,000 peopel here but you woudl never know it.. We have become a bedroom community for Lansing.. They sleep here and send their kids to school but everything else is done there.. We are just beginning to get a few more stores to shop in.. Until to recently all we had was Wal-Mart and K-Mart..

That's about the size my hometown of Mandan was when I was growing up. It's about double that now or there about. But, between Mandan and Bismarck and area, we're probably pushing 50 to 60,000 now and growing. They're talking 75,000 in the next 10-15 years at the rate we're going. They openned two Walmart Superstores and a Sam's Club in the last year. Businesses have been openning right and left, it seems. It's gotten to the point of looking out of state for workers when it comes to Job Service....lots of help wanted signs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ann-McLaren In reply to patrx [2007-01-20 21:27:14 +0000 UTC]

These are about the only jobs available here.. They don't pay enough for a family to survive.. We are losing many workers to other states that pay better wages.. It's just to hard, when both parents have to work two jobs, to survive.. Children are getting lost..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

patrx In reply to Ann-McLaren [2007-01-20 23:30:39 +0000 UTC]

Yup...too much part time jobs available...it's been a common complaint around here, too. But, it's turning around here. Businesses are paying better to keep workers. Even Walmart has been scrambling to find workers. McDonalds and some places are using hiring bonuses as incentives. My youngest sister was hired by Golden Corral as a manager, and they are targeting the highschool and college crowd with low to no interest loans for college for every quarter that they work for them...or something like that. They will be openning their first restaurant in ND here in March. There is a big transportation hub that is going in near the airport which will handle trans-shipment of air, rail and truck cargos. Quite the changes here....
