Description A new REMAKE/REMODEL challenge from Warren Ellis. Here's the brief:
"You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called THE FANTASTIC FOUR. It is issue 1 of this book.

You have been told that the comic is about four people who steal a spaceship, fly into space, get heavily irradiated by cosmic rays, and return to earth weirdly altered by their experience.

And that's it. The bastards haven't told you one more damn thing than that. Not a clue. They might all be women. It might be about the Indian space programme twenty years from now. For all you know this is a JG Ballard story, for christ's sake...

It's up to you what kind of company you're at. What kind of comics you make. How you translate that description of The Fantastic Four. What era you're in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it.

You have one week. Go."

Decided to go kind of retro-60's future with this, playing off the space race and since this book originally came out in 1963, thought I'd vibe off of that as well. Thought about adding an illustrative element as well, but decided to just let the type do the talking.

You seriously rose to the challenge! This is cool and makes an intriguing cover. I definetly would pick up the comic and look inside. It also reminds me of a cover to an old Science Fiction magazine.

Paul,
I really love this piece and I couldn't help notice that you used Freehand (and Photoshop). I've just finally (sadly) left Freehand for Illustrator so I'm curious what is your stance- do you also use AI or are you a Freehand holdout (like I was)?
Ed

The simple fact is that I'm faster in Freehand, because that's what I was trained in. I think Freehand is a better technical program than Illustrator, and that Illustrator is a better drawing program. It's not so much that I'm anti-Illustrator, but from a tech and output standpoint, Freehand is a smarter program.

Excellent work, Paul. But I need this as a poster. Or, even better, as the cover of real comic book.

How not to love Warren Ellis?
This is not the first time that he revisits the FF theme. Think of Planetary. That bloody masterpiece...

PaulSizer In reply to Tazio-Bettin [2011-03-16 16:09:36 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking the same thing; he's done a few visits to the FF as characters in other books, but Planetary is the one to beat. Bloody brilliant, agreed! Thanks!
