PART 26 Johann J. Kaup and his Calicotherium

Gib mir fünf Kumpel!

I know, I know…. I promised an Anomalocaris, but I screwed up the first drawing so I thought it would be best to bring you the next two instead.

Johann Jakob Kaup who was born in 1803 in Darmstadt did not have an easy start in life. He came from a very poor family and was an orphan by the age of 17. He earned money for his education by catching and selling birds. From 1822 on he studied zoology at Heidelberg, Göttingen and Leiden. In this time he especially studied fish and amphibians. He later bought an American Mastodon and became professor for zoology in 1858.

Johanns views on the development of animals were surprisingly modern he however rejected Darwins theory once it came out. However Kaup was much respected among other paleontologists of his time, especially Cuvier and Owen. As a paleontologist he named several prehistoric animals among them the most notable may be the Deinotherium and the Calicotherium - an odd-toed ungulate from the Miocene closely related to the Tapir. It was a browsing animal that most likely walked on its knuckles to spare its claws.

I would be curious to know what Kaup's disagreement with Darwin was.  It sounds like
he would be one of those like myself who would accept some elements of evolution, but
not dismiss the existence of God all together because of it.  But I could be mistaken.

It's kind of a funny picture, depicting the paleontologist with one of his discoveries in
this fashion.  It kind of reminds me of the Disney style of art.

Thank you! Yes that could very well be - in fact a lot of Paleontologists back then - including for example Buckland and Owen - thought that way. After all Buckland was a Theologian as well

Interesting and informative as always.

At that time not even Darwin accapted his own theory XD he wrote a full chapter on what facts and future developmens could immediatly disproove it.
But yeah by now we know that change and adapting to it is life itself, if you wanna call that evolution you can, if you simply wanna call it adapting to new situation you can also do that, it dosent take or give to that fact itself, not dose it in anyway disprove creatin, or explian why us humans are the only seintent speices on this planet, or how we developed that sentients.

Thank you!

True, there is much more controversy in the History of Evolution than modern people may think. They always believe it was just Darwin vs Creationists, but in fact there were a dozen different theories of Evolution to begin with... And as you say... Darwin himself was not that sure most of the time (of course he did not know about Mendelian inheritance)

BeskarKnight In reply to Pelycosaur24 [2016-08-30 18:52:10 +0000 UTC]

Very true!

I only have one real problem with the current evolution theory: and that is the term of 'random mutation' which according to Darwin is the force driving evolution and makes speices able to adapt, the only problem with this process and adaption is anything but not random, nor any sort of mutation. If it would be random it wouldn't lead to adaption, while if it would be mudation it would creat unsustainable cells like cancer and for sure not more advanced ones.

Yet we still call it like that, just to be able to deny any will and plan behind it all.

Pelycosaur24 In reply to BeskarKnight [2016-09-04 13:17:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess even today the Evolutionary Theory still has some gaps and there is still a lot of room for research, especially in relatively new fields.
Hm... I alsways thought random mutation just reffered to the natural diversity in specific traits an animal posseses? But then again I am not sure...

BeskarKnight In reply to Pelycosaur24 [2016-09-04 13:28:19 +0000 UTC]

Very true, the universe and life is infinetly complicated after all.

Well, we might be talking about the same thing, just with different terms, but then again something which is natural is not mutation and if its a trai developing as a response to some outside factors then its not even random.

I am great, especially because I just found out that my specially designed course about Paleontology was accepted by my university

Wow! Congrats! That is really great! I might just have to try something similar for my phd program, i would want to take my own topic to continue working on it, but perhapse with funding from an other exeternal party interested in the filde, so that I can work and engage im academy for the same time.

Btw what was so special on your paleontology course?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pelycosaur24 In reply to BeskarKnight [2016-09-24 11:37:16 +0000 UTC]

Well the special thing about my paleontology course is that it is the only one in all of Austria... there is literally no Paleontology at any university

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BeskarKnight In reply to Pelycosaur24 [2016-09-27 06:43:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh well then that is a really special course for sure, can I also apply?

Once again to have a bigger country like the A/H Empire was, would help on this situation too, to have a paleontolgy course for 9m people is hard and insufficent, but to have it for 60m that would be a different question...
