PART 24 John Newberry and his Dunkleosteos

NEXT Joseph Whiteaves and his Anomalocaris

You are free… wait I still wanted to study you...

John Strong Newberry was born in 1822 in Connecticut. He was interested in Paleobotany from a very young age and would collect fossils from coal mines. In the 1850s he was part of several expeditions to explore the country of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. On these expeditions he became the first Geologist to study the Grand Canyon. During the American Civil War he was tasked with overlooking field hospitals since he was also a physician. And finally at in 1866 he became a professor for Geology and Paleontology at the Columbia University, as well as the President of the AAAS in 1867.

His paleontological work focused on Paleozoic fish and Paleobotany. Amongst his discoveries was a giant Devonian Placoderm which he classified as Dinichthys. It could grow ut to 10 m (33ft) in length and the first third of its body was heavily armored. Lacking teeth it instead sports sharp bony plates protruding from its jaw. In 1956 it was re-classified and given the name “Dunkleosteos”.

Fantastic work and a great homage, I hadn't heard of this Palaeontologist before. He reminds me of the British scientist Arthur Smith Woodward, another fish specialist (who you might want to add to the list )

Interestingly I recently discovered that the skull of Dunkleosteus was at largest 72cm long, which probably means 10 metres is an overestimate. That said, the one in the picture looks to be about 5-6 metres long which was within the range of realistic size for Dunkleosteus, so well done for that!

Pelycosaur24 In reply to EdaphosaurusPogonias [2016-05-29 20:28:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I am glad I could bring Newberry some new fans. Woodward is allready on the list. I always try to mix it up with the types of animals I draw so when fish come along next time it will be his turn

Interesting, thats good to know It was also the best size that fit with the composition of the picture.

Haha, thought so! I love that model. Sad that it doesn't have many companions in the Devonian spot in my collection though.

Yes, its one of my favorites! In my collection he has at leat 4 companions from the Devonian ( I recently did the very nerdy thing to noet the amount of animals from each time period )

This drawing reminds me of the time I fed dolphins in Japan. We held squid out over the tank with a set of tongs. For children the dolphins would raise themselves out of the water and wait for the squid to drop. For elderly people and women the dolphins would gently take the squid from the tongs. But for healhy adult males they would fly out of the water and sieze the squid while passing feet over the man's head. Like what you show here. That was when I knew that dolphis are sentient.

Thats awesome! They appear incredibly smart. I once fed a Dolphin in Duisburg Zoo in Germany - the touch of their skin in very interesting too.
