Description An early house-warming present to my parents for the home that they're currently building. My mom saw the last paper illustration I did ([link] ) and asked for one of a national park.

Sequoia is tied in first place with Zion for my favorite park, so here it is! You can take a look at my blog for close ups and a step-by-step of how I made this one. [link]

Again beautiful! I love the foggy overlay.I have another question though (sorry if I'm being irritating ) but what kind of paper do you use?

Thank you! No, never irritating! My favorite part about deviantArt is exchanging tips with other artists! The paper I use is actually scrap-booking paper. It's thick, durable, acid and lignin free (I have no idea what lignin is, but I imagine it's not helpful when trying to preserve something). I buy whole books of paper if I find a good print or else I can just buy single sheets of the colors that I need.

In this particular one, I also used tracing paper smeared with olive oil to make it transparent.

the tracing paper is genius!
If you haven't tried paper-source.com for some great textured paper you should.

Thank you! I get a lot of my paper from Michael's Craft Store. The scrapbooking paper is perfect for preservation, and they have some cool textures. Thanks for the tip!

Sweet idea! I love Sequoia And is that a bear walking through the snow?

Thanks! I love Sequoia too And yes, that's a bear walking through the snow! 7 out of the 8 times I've visited Sequoia, I've crossed paths with at least one bear, so I thought it was only fitting to have one in this piece.

AH! So amazing! I love the way it has 'grown' out of the frame. And the depth in the whole thing is amazing too.
Is that a little tiny bear at the bottom I see?

Pen-umbra In reply to The-Jedi-Ninja [2011-11-18 16:52:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Yes, there's a little bear at the base of the tree. I really wanted to show the scope of these massive trees, so I thought adding a small animal would give a point of reference for the scale.

The-Jedi-Ninja In reply to Pen-umbra [2011-11-18 23:52:11 +0000 UTC]

It certainly does. Bears are huge, and that one is tiny compared to the trees! Makes me want to go to the actual place now. ^.^

It's beautiful at Sequoia! The trees look so strange and prehistoric (they used to cover the planet when the dinosaurs were around!). Most people who visit the US go to Los Angeles, Vegas and New York, but skip over these little gems that are there for the tourists who did their homework.

This looks great! Is there some kind of seetrough paper between the tree on the front and the bakground?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pen-umbra In reply to Maleijn [2011-11-18 16:50:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Good eye! There are actually 2 layers of tracing paper in this. One is between the bottom and middle layers and the second is between the middle and top layers. On this second tracing paper, I wanted a gradient, with the bottom being more transparent than the top. So I used olive oil to grease up the bottom a bit. Follow the link in my comments to see the step-by-step on my blog.
