Hey, Noir here! Back again with another Fairy-type Pokemon, the second of the three that will be used by the Fairy-type gym leader of the region. Today's installment is based on the Icelandic horse, a rather underappreciated breed of horse hailing from the fellow island country of Iceland!

DESIGN & CONCEPT

These Pokemon are based largely on horses, specifically the Icelandic horse, which is shares much of its behavioral traits as well. On the mythological side, this Pokemon was largely based on the myth of Sleipnir, the horse on which Odin, the chief god of the Norse religion, rode on. While in myth the horse is usually depicted with 8 legs, I decided to keep it to 4 due to design constraints. Perhaps one can imagine it moving so fast that it has the appearance of having 'after-images' of its legs.

For their abstract theme, these Pokemon represent, unsurprisingly, the Vikings! From ancient sagas of Iceland and Vinland to Gothic incursions into mainland Europe to the great Norman kingdoms of northern France, the Northmen of Scandinavia has long been a thorn on the side of many European kingdoms and polities. They stood the test of time and emerged as one of the pillars of Western civilization - just goes to show that life isn't always so black and white.

ELFOAL: These Pokemon was brought into the region millenia ago, by mysterious tribes from the North who had mastered the winds and conquered the waves. Despite this, however, much of their civilization has turned to dust. No more than a few overgrown settlements remain when the humans from the east began spreading westwards. Despite the mystery surrounding this Pokemon, it remains one of most widespread wild horse species present in the region. Usually found on snowy mountaintops, they are also sometimes seen in the dense forests in the outer perimeter of the region. These little horses are extremely sure-footed, scaling along sheer rock faces with ease. They are also known to be quite playful, dancing in the snow, kicking up a fine mist of powder snow around them. Design-wise, this Pokemon is based on foals, young horses below the age of 1 year old. Their playful nature is very much a personality trait of real-life foals. Coloration for this Pokemon takes into account its largely snowy habitats, with white fur covering most of their body and black present for accent markings. Thematically, they represent a Viking youth, a real rough-and-tumble type of child, living out in the harsh conditions of their homeland with a seemingly unaware, carefree attitude.

SLYPNEIGH: While a common sight in outback stations nowadays, the Pokemon Slypneigh's natural habitat is the southeastern snowy mountaintops of the region (fittingly named the Snowies). In recent times they have been re-domesticated and spread all over the continent. The adaptations that allowed this Pokemon to survive with ease in the tundra also allows them to live in the desert quite comfortably. Their shiny white coat allows them to reflect most of the heat of the desert, while their long eyelashes - adapted to reduce glare from the sun reflecting off snow - also keeps out the sand. Unlike most horse species, these Pokemon do not ride 'hard,' rather they seem almost dainty in their stride, navigating loose sand and rocks without a care in the world. The ride is so smooth that many horse fanciers consider them a 'flying' breed, gliding over rough terrain. Their small stature also makes them more approachable to children; many in the region grew up learning to ride horses on these Pokemon. They are so ingrained in the culture of the region that some have even taken to keeping Slypneighs as house pets, as their calm and gentle nature makes them easier to take care of even compared to most cats and dogs. For its design, this Pokemon is largely based on the Icelandic horse, with some traits from donkeys intermixed (such as its larger head-to-body ratio and snout shape). The symbol on its chest is of Norse origin, which represents protection and safety in battle - it also doubles as a snowflake motif to tie in with its typing. Its coloration is meant to show its history as an Arctic breed, glistening white with an ice-blue mane and tail (with hooves the same color to give the impression of solid ice); with black accents persisting. In theming, this Pokemon represents the strength and determination of the Scandinavian people - through many manifestations of their culture, sometimes bloody and cruel, one thing that remained unchanged was the indomitable spirit of the population.

Elfoal and Slypneigh are meant to complete the rock-paper-scissors circuit between the Ponyta line (Fire) and the Mudbray line (Ground), with all of them being two-stage elemental horses from regions bordering the Pacific Ocean. In simple words, Fire > Ice > Ground > Fire.

Elfoal is the combination of the words 'elf,' in reference to its small size, as well as in reference to the Nordic mythological creature, and 'foal,' a young horse.

Slypneigh comes from words 'Sleipnir,' the eight-legged horse of Odin from Norse mythology, 'sylph,' a kind of air spirit or fairy, and 'neigh,' the onomatopoeia for the whinnying of a horse.
