Ive been thinking on this one. Took me a while to notice that the figures in the background are staring at her backside. She doesn't look like the loose sort, so she seems oblivious to the attention. Several interesting aspects here. She's a model of sincerity. Her hands are over her heart, as if that's where she wants the attention to go. But as nature would have it: the nature of lecherous old men, or the nature of young men in a sex-cultured world, down to the nature of the animal kingdom that literal fireflies inhabit, its the arse that shines and gets the attention. No female firefly won a suitor with depth of character. Its a pitiable drama of nature. Not just in her obliviousness, but in the nature of the admirers. If the decay signifies age, its a telltale sign of the truth that men never stop being horny. No matter how much they say they think of the younger girls as their adoptive granddaughters, you know theyre too embarrassed to admit theyre having geriatric erections. The context of decay makes it reproachable. Irony being if these men were in their prime we'd go easier on them for staring. Also showing that everyone is 17 years old for life and there isn't much natural about aging, growing old and dying. The human spirit doesnt age along with the body.
