Description Smilodon fatalis: "deadly knife tooth." This guy needs no introduction. The largest of all Sabertooth Cats, Smilodon was the size of a modern African Lion, but had a more robust body which enabled the cat to take down bison, giant ground sloths and even mammoths. It was essentially a lion on steroids. Smilodon may have also lived and hunted in groups like lions or wolves. Their 9-inch canine teeth were adapted for slicing through the neck’s major blood vessels and crushing the windpipe. In contrast, modern big cats usually kill their prey by suffocation. Over 2,000 Smilodon fossils have been uncovered at La Brea. I bet the first thing you'll think of seeing this guy is Diego from the Ice Age movies. By the way, there is no such thing as a sabertooth tiger.

I was born and raised in So. California.  I used to make frequent trips to all of the 'science' related museums, and I loved it.  I left for Utah 24 years ago, but managed to sneak in one last trip to Rancho La Brea!

I was just looking at your page.......do you work in a zoo?  Or do you (like I once did) just spend a lot of time there?
