Description I noticed a bright orange glow through my living room window and it didn't take me long to realize what was happening. There was a spectacular sunset; one worthy of a photograph. So I grabbed my camera, jumped into my car, hit every red light possible, got stuck behind people driving half the speed limit, and finally arrived at my destination too late. The fire in the sky was gone.

But I did get this shot of the smoldering aftermath.

This is an old photo but I used newer HDR tools to process it.  Original version here:  phosus.deviantart.com/art/Too-…

There's an app for photographers that predicts the probability of a great sunset. It's called Skyfire. Right now, it's only available for iPhone and costs $25/yr, but I think they're also working on an Android app. I haven't used it but sounds like it would have been helpful in this case Where is this, by the way? Looks a bit like Colorado.

Thanks for the heads up on that app.  A predictor for colorful sunsets would be wonderful.  Can it predict sunrises as well?  I love doing night hikes into the mountains to catch a good sunrise but it's rare to get something this glorious  I'm an android user so I'll have to wait for it or try something else.

Yes, this is CO!  This was shot off highway 128 south of Boulder/Louisville.  The National Wind Technology Center is on the left with Eldorado Canyon, South Boulder Peak, Green Mountain, the Flatirons, and even Longs Peak and the Twin Sisters visible in the distance.

Yes it also predicts sunrises! I also have an Android, so I can't wait for them to finish developing it. But, I just moved out to CO a few months ago, and luckily it seems like 9 times out of 10 the sunsets out here are stunning anyway.

Looks awesome. There should be some sort of warning system up when the planet is planning something good for the camera . Or that would just be one continuous stream of events.

That would work if I were only notified of amazing things happening within driving distance
