Description Velociraptor I made for the Dinosaur contest at
www.deviantart.com/journal/Din…

Before anyone comments about feathers, I'm sticking with the Jurassic Park versions. I love JP ever since I first watched it. Inaccurate or not I still love it.

Anyway, here is my entry. When I saw the theme was going to be Dinosaurs, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make this guy. I have big plans for him and future Velociraptors. The skin pattern is made with fabric markers since this was the first time making one. Everything is poseable except his inner toes.

I wanted to make an open moth for him like I did with Titan, but since he is smaller scale, it didn't work out as well. Plus, Titans teeth go outside his mouth like a T-rex, Velociraptors dont, so I couldn't get it to work as well.

What kind of wire armature do you use? I'd like to start using them for projects yet whenever I try to make one it ends up a bundle of stabby wires, what kind of wire are you using for these?

I use 16-18gauge aluminum wire depending on the project.

Not scientifically accurate I'm afraid. Next time try to look at pictures of what a velociraptor actually looked like. Still very adorable though! nice workΒ

It was based off the JP version as stated in the description and I know what they really looked like.

Feathers aren't the only thing JP got wrong... Β They got the hands wrong too. The raptors ha hands that fce the other direction, not inwards towrds their feet, but outwards like a birds wing.

Out of curiosity, do you just use a wire of some sort to make them poseable?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pickleweasel360 In reply to Kaiodi [2015-08-04 08:10:27 +0000 UTC]

Yep! They all have wire armatures that help them pose in different ways.

This is incredible, I was looking for some inspiration to see if anyone had made a good looking jurassic park style velociraptor, so I wouldn't have to totally wing a pattern if I didn't have to, and I came across this. I love the patterning, I want to make Blue from Jurassic world, and I love the fabric marker idea. Β How did you make the claws, if I might ask? I was thinking about my options and since I want to make mine pretty small, I was left a bit at a loss when it came to the design stage. (I'm also thinking of knitting mine but I do both so)

Pickleweasel360 In reply to NevynS [2015-07-01 09:36:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I haven't seen the movie yet or I'd probably be making one as well. However I'd prefer it if you would use your own pattern instead of copying mine. I've had a problem with pattern theft and this makes me uncomfortable. If you are making a small one, pipe cleaners would do well for claws. Don't get your markered areas wet after applying and be sure they dry fully before touching it or they will smear.

NevynS In reply to Pickleweasel360 [2015-07-03 00:00:18 +0000 UTC]

I always use my own patterns now that I'm not a beginner, but it's nice to see how other people apply their own designs to the same idea, to get inspiration, you know? Like your little unicorn, it's amazing and totally different from what I would do.

Β I totally understand about pattern theft being an issue, it's hard work to make a pattern. I've been hesitant to post my favorite pattern on ravelry because theft is so common and I sell the finished ones sometimes. There's no way to stop someone from selling a ton on etsy and acting like they made up the design, you know?

How do fabric markers work on darker colors? Or different types of yarn? I'm using a silk yarn since it happened to be the perfect color, and I've never heard of fabric markers before I saw your work. Which is fantastic by the way, you have a great distinctive style.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pickleweasel360 In reply to NevynS [2015-07-03 18:26:38 +0000 UTC]

Yea, the way you wrote it out made it sound like you wanted to copy in instead of making your own. I've been stitch counted before, but yea, inspiration is a different thing.

There is very little to be done about pattern theft, from stitch counting or outright theft, I'm hesitant to ever post another pattern because of it. I found a few sites that people post paid for patterns on there for people to download. Literally no one acknowledges it as theft and uses the excuse as it being for 'educational purposes'. The admins IP and account block anyone who says otherwise. Sick. If you do sell that pattern. Watermark everything. It will help.

Fabric markers only work if the marker is darker than the yarn. Otherwise you will have to use felt or sew on lighter yarn. I haven't used silk yarn before, but you could make a test patch and try your markers out on it before your finished piece. They don't have to be fabric markers, I use sharpies, prismacolor, and copics depending on the color I need. I use a fine point sharpie to do mouths sometimes. Thank you!

NevynS In reply to Pickleweasel360 [2015-07-03 22:41:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I have some copics and sharpies so I might try those out, I'll just embroider on the lighter colors, blue has white stripes as well as dark blue ones, so I was wondering. I'm definitely going to remember that for future plushies, might make doing faces and clothing details easier to just draw them on.

I don't know, a Cassowary will kill you. Now imagine it's moa sized, has teeth & 5in claws - sounds scary to me. We probably only survived 'cause they all died.

Love the amigurumi though! Stripes and that eye is fab, great stuff!

Pickleweasel360 In reply to catfruitcup [2014-04-14 16:03:50 +0000 UTC]

I agree, a Cassawary is pretty scary, but if I remember correctly the velociraptors were about the size of a chicken. That isn't so scary. The things they thought were velociraptors (the ones they based the JP ones from) they actually renamed them Utahraptors. I think thats how it went, its been a while since I read about it. Cassawary's are pretty awesome. I thought about making one for an upcoming contest.

Thank you The marker details took forever but I'm so happy with the way they turned out.

Pickleweasel360 In reply to Tarrpit [2014-04-03 10:14:13 +0000 UTC]

x3 The claws are actually yarn wrapped around wire. I can't crochet that thin either unless it was with crochet thread. Wrapping the yarn around the wire gives it a thin and smooth look.
