Description [Funnily enough, close but not quite to the meaning of Réticences in French... look it up for your Bilingual Bonus of the day.]

Yo, Christine. If there's something eating at you -- like, having a certain bit of extra insight into a certain person's moral dilemmas of the moment -- that you think Sarah should know about.... maybe spit it out? No? Okay then.

(The dress shop in question belongs to Japanese dress creators and slightly deranged fashionistas Jóji "George" Koizumi [from Paradise Kiss] and Tomoyo [from Card Captor Sakura]. If you are familiar with their canon works... well. Otherwise, no sweat, is just a wee bonus, nothing plot-important.)

Now. Lets get them to this much-prepared party!

"I can totes have Erik kicked out if he tries any red death BS"

I'm glad that Sarah is not blinding herself to what Erik is capable of. Which again makes me wonder just how much of a manipulative genius she could be, and if so, whether or not she even realizes it.

I'd recommend solid metal over brick, it takes way too long to clean up the bag if the brick breaks in it.

I used to think Christine was nervous about going to the party because of her own Masquerade canon experience but after rereading the comic, I understand the real reason why.

I completely forgot that Christine had her own traumatizing Masquerade ball experience. At least they're bringing bricks.

I'm full of admiration for the upward angle in that first panel (and the flash of evil inspiration in Christine's one visible eye in the bottom row!)

Clearly an somewhat exhausting shopping trip, as Christine's first reaction is to strip off her shoes and Raoul's is to help himself to a drink (also, I note that he was apparently keeping count of the number of dresses that Sarah tried on!) Judging by the number of bags and boxes they brought back, I'd actually assumed that Christine had purchased multiple options 'just in case' (or in order to delay the moment of making the final decision); but I don't know how much space this type of outfit takes up. And I don't know if Christine was buying all-new for herself as well, which would double the number of items...

Assuming that Jareth is 'a certain person', I have to say that I have no idea what sort of insights Christine is supposed to be divulging here

Hmmm. Before-last panel Chris is not intended to be flash of evil inpsiration so much as ''serious moment of misgivings/hesitation before saying 'what the hell'''. The thing that is on Christine's mind here > pika-la-cynique.deviantart.com…

And thanks - one of the few justifications I can find for spending so long on this comic is practice, so attempts at tricky angles sometimes.

Nice touch with the Clutch Brick. I personally go for a few stones with "sense" written on the side--ya' know, for irony's sake.

Do you think that Jóji and Tomoyo would have an assistant in the shop? I have to reread Paradise Kiss, but I'm working on a fanfic of this. No promises it will come out anytime soon but I'm got some ideas going.
One of the ideas is that Tomoyo has already seen the Labyrinth and is a fan of it. ( and a J&S shipper ) Does anyone else think that would be a possibly?

Fanfic is always welcome.
Possible J/S does not need any more shippers, at least Sarah would tell you that. Whatever works for your plotbunny!

My love for Raoul continues to grow. He's gotten remarkably zen about all the goings-on in the apartment complex, although (after seeing some of how he's been spending his time in France), I get the feeling it's the sort of zen that nods and smiles and plays along and quietly makes comprehensive plans in case everything goes pear-shaped.

Grecian-Girl [2013-11-11 06:50:45 +0000 UTC]

You know, I really liked Raoul when I was little (I grew up on Phantom Cd's), it wasn't until I got older that I started noticing that he didn't believe her when she said 'The Opera Ghost is real, I was there, I saw him' which made me dislike him. And then I found this comic and not only does it make me love Erik more but I actually like Raoul again, especially a page or two back with the unfortunately timed nakedness on the couch.  His brand of snark is amusing

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Igenlode In reply to Grecian-Girl [2014-04-21 03:42:18 +0000 UTC]

And the irony of that is that in the original novel it's Raoul, despite their mutual addiction to fairy-stories, who is convinced from the start that this 'Ghost' has got to be some flesh and blood imposter, and Christine who happily believes in bodiless Angels of Music until it's too late...

Oh, that's interesting! I haven't read the book.

Igenlode In reply to Grecian-Girl [2014-04-25 16:23:00 +0000 UTC]

"... the voice he had heard through the door of her dressing-room and his conversation with Christine at the edge of the moor made him suspect some machination which, evil though it might be, was none the less human. ...all this must constitute, Raoul thought, an ideal moral ground for the malevolent designs of some  mysterious and unscrupulous agent.
"Of whom was Christine Daaé the victim? Such was the reasonable, common-sense question that Raoul put to himself... For the Viscount's judgement was remarkably sound. Of course he was a poet, he loved music at its most lofty, relished those old Breton tales about fairies dancing in the moonlight and. more than anything, was in love with Christine Daaé, his sweet little maiden from the North.   All the same, he only believed in the supernatural with regard to religion, and even the most fantastical story could not convince him that two and two are five." (Penguin Classics translation, Ch.9)

That last sentence is the one that gets quoted... but the fanfic universe in which Raoul is a wealthy, brainless Hooray Henry with a tin ear *really* doesn't bear any relationship to the unfortunate young man of the novel!
