Description ... except Mom.  But this little one soon rejoined her.  (Sorry to keep posting this shot--see scrapbook--but Ruth (kayaksailor ) had a good idea about how to level this without losing the rocks underfoot and this is now my favorite version.)

I agree that this picture is cropped just right, and it makes a nice sharp contrast with the background.  Beautiful work!

Think you finally found the sweet spot on the crop here, Tris. What an adorable little guy!

Thanks, LeeAnne!  The youngster was pretty cute.  You'd have laughed if you'd seen me scrunched on the floor of my car trying to get low enough to look through the view-finder and yet keep the camera angled up the almost vertical slope.  Getting a level shot was never going to happen but at least I got something.

was going to mention trying a tighter crop from the original..more vertical but you exceeded my expectations with this crop! definitely glad you kept those rocks in there

I'm glad you approve!  It was another case of me missing the obvious until Ruth kayaksailor came along and showed me.  I so love feedback...

we all look at photos differently and occasionally it just takes a 2nd pair of eyes

You've given me an approach to cropping that I'll always have in my tool kit.  That's worth a lot!

Glad to be of help!  I find it interesting to look at shots my daughter has taken of the same subject...she tends to shoot horizontally while I tend to shoot vertically.  Obviously the subject often dictates the orientation, and I'll do both of some objects/places - but invariably my first shot is vertical

Horizon lines were deeply engraved in my subconsciousness back in my school photo classes and there have been more than a few shots saved/rescued by a "straighten and vertical crop"

I think I tend to be in the horizontal camp, though it might be because I find it easier.  My tripod won't take an L plate... yet another thing I didn't factor in because I simply didn't know.

My tripod isn't a very expensive one but I did make sure I could change from horizontal to vertical with just a twist of one lever... I don't know how close to a Fry's Electronics store you are but they often have awesome sales on theirs - on-line too...

I can change to vertical but it's a bit awkward... and nigh impossible with my heavy telephoto lens attached.  Maybe someday I'll buy a tripod that takes an L-plate.

The only chain shopping we have here is K-Mart.  Although Walgreen's did make a brief appearance--long enough to create a slide that has inconvenienced all the residents on the butte and torn one house in two.  (I rather suspect that particular Walgreen's is toast.)  For the most part our shopping consists of T-shirts and knickknacks for tourists, high-end art, and western paraphernalia.  So, yes, internet shopping is my friend.

Yes, I was lucky.    Only I think I may have left a piece of my heart with that little guy...

This is the best one, not only more level but framed nicely too. It's like a portrait of her....
