Sadly, my old personas were Mary Sue as heck! XD

I hate to tell you this but...
Those test don't actually help.
Those test are basically knee jerk reactions. Over generalizing traits as inherently bad or signs of bad character development.
Which isn't true.
What you actually should be on the look out for when making a character is bad writing.
As in, are you creating a character that was made for a story or to cover your own poor writing skills and ego stroking?
In fact it will stifle your creativity if you cut yourself off from taking risk because of poorly conceived notions from other people who read shitty fanfictions and associated certain qualities with bad writing.
I have some advice of my own on writing characters which you (and your viewers) might want to check out in my journals.
But if not interested remember this and you'll never go wrong:
"There is no such thing as bad characters. Only bad writers" - Me

?
you don't have to worry, i didn't take this test as seriously as you seem to think. i was merely curious about how my characters would rank in the test, since at that time many people that i followed had taken it.
about writing skills, i'm not sure if i qualify as good or bad.
thanks to my upbringing thought, i do have the ability to recognize poor quality stories in therms of characterization, plot, pace, or syntax with ease. so that might help me with my own writing.
i appreciate your advice, and i think i'm going to see those journals you mentioned.

Nice to see someone else who views these test the same way xD I always laugh at these because they are so general
My more Sueish characters are fine while my more normal characters are sues! Lol

yeah, it can happen! when you try too hard to get a normal character, you end up making cliches, borings characters, or, as you said, mary sues. it's like a natural law.

What exactly is a Mary-Sue?

ColorfulLuxray In reply to NekoVision [2014-12-06 21:16:31 +0000 UTC]
I see this was about 4 months ago, but mary sue can be something like this.
1: The most powerful character ever
Nobody can defeat this character, even though they "Don't try"
2: No flaws
This character is the prettiest/handsomest character ever! They either have a very good body structure (Very skinny, great muscles, ect) or their face is perfect. Or even more mary-sue, both! This also applies to talents and new skills. Everything is easy for them and they never break a sweat, no matter how difficult the task is.
3: Related to or in love with a cannon character
This character is one of the main characters siblings, daughter/son, mother/father (which I rarely see, but I'll include it anyway), boyfriend/girlfriend/partner, ect.
4: Generic or crazy design
Most OCS are called Mary-sue for the design and colors. Mostly for having lots of rainbows/bright colors, black and red, weird and non-matching patterns, ect
5: Generic backstory
Basically their back story is the easiest thing to think of, like they are insane so they killed everyone they love, they are evil but they never loose, they are perfect and everyone loves them/a canon character loves them, ect.
So yeah, those are the main reason characters are called mary-sue. I hope this helps!

PinkMochi In reply to NekoVision [2014-08-17 03:01:42 +0000 UTC]
well, that's a rather difficult question, because the concept is subjective… i'll try to explain the concept as i know it, so don't expect 100% accuracy. This is also going to be a very long explanation, so be prepared.
A Mary-sue is a character that is perfect, in the simplest of terms. A character that has too many qualities, with little to non-existent flaws. Is unrealistic, and quite annoying to watch/read.
1) Appearance: the Mary sue has a perfect figure, and doesn't have to do any effort to maintain it. They can eat junk food and don't get fat, they wake up in the morning and they look like a Disney princess. Even if they fight, they don't get any bruises or scars that affect their beauty.
In many cases, a Mary sue is given an appearance so unique, they are unnatural. For example, in a story where everyone has normal hair (black, brown, blonde), they are given a weird color (blue, pink, green) as their natural color. In a story where people have hair with different colors (orange, violet, lavender), they have many colors (rainbow hair). The same happens with the color of the eyes.
The clothes they wear also tends to be "unique". Independently of the style or fashion they follow, they always stand out from the crowd, even if they have to wear a uniform. They also tend to be sexy and/or cute.
2) Abilities: The Mary sue is the best in any field relevant to the story, and is a natural. She doesn't need practice, or learns faster than the rest of humanity. If the story is about science, then she's the most capable scientist. If the story is about sports, then she is the best/fastest/strongest. If the story is about superpowers, then she gets to be the most powerful.
The talents they can have also tend to bend the basic rules of the world they live in. They can have supernatural powers when no one else has them without a logical explanation. They just have them, period.
Of course, they cannot have only one talent, so they are proficient in many different fields. They can cook like a chef, fight like a black belt, sing like a soprano, and the list goes on and on.
3) Background: for reasons unknown, the Mary sues are perfect, but they tend to have a tragic past. They tend to be orphans, or have been subject to experiments, abuse, rape, violence, war, etc., and to make it worst, they develop amnesia. So they've gone through hell, but they don't remember it. Quite convenient.
Other Mary sues are rich, or they are royalty, while the rest of the characters are middle class. They can be poor, while the rest of the characters are rich. They can also be from a different ethnicity than the rest of the characters, or have a mixed heritage that no one else has. All in all, their background, just like the appearance and the abilities, is made with the purpose of making them different from the rest without a proper explanation.
4) Flaws: they don't have any flaws noteworthy. They don't have bad habits, and if they do, it doesn't affect their health or well-being.
They can be bad in the fields that hold no interest to the story. They can be bad at sports, but the story is about an online game. They can be a bad cook, but the story is about a police investigation. They can trip with their own shadow on the street, but they can still dance breakdance like a pro in a contest.
Their flaws are also used as a plot-device for romance. They are made "clumsy" so they can slip and fall in the arms of their love interest. As cheap as it sounds.
5) Personality: depending on the moment, they can be nurturing, nice, and sugar-sweet, or cold, logical and badass. Real people are complex, and hence we react according to the situation, but the Mary sue acts inconsistently. Sometimes the change of attitude is so noticeable, it looks like they have split-personality disorder. But they don't.
Mary sues don't actually go through any mental development, because they are already perfect. They use their qualities to save the day, so they don't learn from their mistakes (they don't make huge mistakes to begin with, everything is fixable).
6) Relationships: Everybody loves the Mary sue. Even the most stoic, unattainable guys of the universe fall head-over-heels for her (love at first sight, obviously). She has the most loyal, dependable and nicest friends. The only ones allowed to hate her are the spiteful, jealous female competition she has.
And i could continue, but this is getting too long O.o
I hope you get a general idea… out of this huge answer… but if you want to ask something, or you didn't get the idea, just let me know.
