Great work!!! It's one of the most beautiful I've ever seen before... Do you also make the scabbard?

Thanks very much! I didn't make the sheath for this one, since at this point I had just barely worked out how to make one. Only my more recent work have them.

Oh trust me, I did slack off several times. What's funny though, is sometimes I am slacking off while carving, like instead of doing homework!

emerold-dragon [2008-09-01 15:46:26 +0000 UTC]

hey how did you do the wrapping on the hilt, i tried to do it on my sword for my cosplay the other day but it doesnt look right. o and is it purple coz if so then my colours are all wornd....damn

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

piratecaptain In reply to emerold-dragon [2008-09-06 16:13:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, I use a traditional wrapping style. There are couple tutorials for it up on DA, I think by Laitz. As for the color, there is quite a debate as to if its purple, or a light purple/pink color. I really don't know. But, this color that I used was the color used in an official color page from the artist.

thanks, that was really helpful....but i think i'll have to go and rewrap the hilt now.....urgh.....but it'll be worth it i suppose! (^_^)

Gorgeous one suggestion use several coats of primer and sand it smooth after three coats. You will get far better looking blades.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

piratecaptain In reply to fixinman [2008-07-12 03:24:01 +0000 UTC]

I'll give it a shot. My painting is kind of a weak spot, so I appreciate the suggestion!

fixinman In reply to piratecaptain [2008-07-12 04:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Sode has six coats of primer and was finish sanded with 600 sandpaper. You need a really white surface to spray white or it takes forever to paint it. I am going to start experimenting to get the ray skin effect on the handle.

Have you ever tried working with stainless steel in doing your swords?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

piratecaptain In reply to z3r0t0lerance [2008-03-27 05:19:23 +0000 UTC]

I haven't, althought I would love too. Any ideas as to where to start?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

z3r0t0lerance In reply to piratecaptain [2008-04-22 08:59:29 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a craftsman myself so I wouldn't have any ideas. You could ask maybe *merkymerx since the sword he used for a Sasuke cosplay was made of stainless steel

I must ask you one question. What did you use for this particular ito? I cant seem to find a fabric the right shade for it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

piratecaptain In reply to ThisIsMyDeviantName [2008-02-17 22:16:00 +0000 UTC]

I used whats called bias tape. It's just a fabric strip made for edging on blankets and such. Found it in JoAnn's Fabrics. It comes in different widths, this one is half inch. Hope that helps.

You know every time I look at your work it makes me feel like crap, but I can't help it it is soo freakin' good
not to mention it makes me strive to be a better craftsman.
One again I am staggering under the excellence of your abilities

The finish on the blade is really nice, If I was more than 3 feet away I'd probably mistake it for steel ^_^

piratecaptain In reply to Dinodude73 [2008-02-06 21:38:32 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thank again for the kind words! I'm glad I set the bar high as long as it makes you want to do better. And I took a little extra time on the blade this time, after struggling a little with the Vermillion. Turned out nice, just needs one more coat of paint.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dinodude73 In reply to piratecaptain [2008-02-10 23:34:14 +0000 UTC]

well I hope it turns out well ^_^
whenever I decide to do "one more coat" of paint I usually screw it up and end up repainting it 5 times to make it look like it did before the "one more coat"

Once again! Excellent job! I really enjoy seeing your work! Do you have a tutorial in your gallery (I know you have a carvig one, but what about a full blown swordcrafting process; I'd definately love to learn how to do this).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

piratecaptain In reply to 11th-division [2008-02-06 21:33:43 +0000 UTC]

I don't have a tutorial that covers the whole process unfortunately, but I'd be happy to answer any questions or help you however, and *chioky has a tutorial set that covers his process as well. And maybe at some point I'll set up a full blown tutorial as well.

11th-division In reply to piratecaptain [2008-02-07 00:50:11 +0000 UTC]

Chioky's does help....but I'd have to tone it down for non-powertools (which is no problem).
However, if you do create one in the future, awesome.
For now, you might just get a few questions from me, I guess.
