A MAHOGANY TSUBA?! isn't that a kinda pricey wood to use on a pine sword?

A company near me makes incredible tables and kiosk solutions for corporations and big companies and they use prime wood. I can get the scrap they generate for free, so a little piece of mahogany is nothing big. And I'm a big believer in overkill.

Very well done though next time use maple there are no knots and it will give you a stiffer blade. I love the hand guard. Did you carve the curve or steam form it. I am now steam forming mine.

Yeah, I've been looking to get into different wood types soon. I carve my curves. How long does the steam process take. Being able to do that would make the time to make these much shorter.

I steam my blades for about an hour, but I allow about a week for them to dry properly. I remove it from the mold every day and turn it to dry the other side evenly.

Did you use a wood burner for the crossguard?

No, that design is carved in with a knife.

Really good work!
I think I figured out the wrapping, do you just twist the tape every other quarter turn and spiral down the hilt?

piratecaptain In reply to Dinodude73 [2007-03-17 21:21:53 +0000 UTC]

glad you like it. yeah, thats pretty much it for the wrap, its really basic, but it still looks good. just remember to twist it all the way around so the sticky part is down. i kept messing that up cause it was late at night
