Description I'd given it lots of thought, since I knew I was going to get another tattoo, and it was just a matter of deciding on the subject matter and style. I created the design on paper and refined it in Painter last week, and today, I had it inked by Chris Christiansen of "Dragon's Den Tattoos and Piercing" in Augusta, GA(tattooing is still basically illegal here in South Carolina, despite a law being passed to permit it, due to red tape and loopholes). I created a stylized design combining my first initial, Celtic knotwork, and of course, my dear Randall Boggs, who shall indeed always be a part of me now. For those of you who don't know, Randall is pretty much symbolic of where I've been in my past, as well as those people I need to reach out to, so he's much more than just an animated character. The overall design was inspired by "The Book of Kells" illuminated manuscripts.

what a well thought out and designed tattoo .

man i want to see the book of kells; its very detailed for such a small piece and each one is well thought out. i've only seen google images of it but i would rather see the pieces in real life like i did when i went to LA to see Vincent VanGo paintings

I had no idea that tattooing was illegal over there. Very interesting.

Anyway, that's an impressive piece of art there.

That is absolutely incredible! Randall is a babe, isn't he? Who could be better?

Hmm, I live in South Carolina, too. Is it still illegal? Because I've been wanting to get a tatoo myself :-/

It is now legal to get a tattoo in South Carolina, in fact, I have seen billboards advertizing tattoo parlours in North Augusta. You cannot get one if you're under 18, and under 21 requires a parent/guardian to be with you and sign for it, and it's illegal to get a tattoo anywhere above the shoulder, on the head or neck, though WHY I don't know. At the time I got this one, though, the final details had not been put in, so it was still illegal, and that's why I had to go across the state line.

Well, I'm 18, so at least I CAN get one lol. And I wouldn't want one ony my neck or head anyway.

How painful was the tattooing, by the way?

Hehe, claver name and a wonderful design! I'm glad you got something that will always mean something to you How long did it take?

pitbulllady In reply to Gothic-Gryphon [2006-02-21 15:06:49 +0000 UTC]

It took about 3-3 1/2 hours from the start of outlining to finish. Tattooing is a slow and tedious process, even with modern equipment. There's no room for error, since it's not like you can erase a mistake! Sitting there, very still, is the most difficult part for me, since I'm kinda on the hyper side anyway.

And designing the tattoo yourself makes it that much more gratifing Yeah, all of the tension, time and discomfort is all worth it in the end though. I'm currently designing one as well, I'll be getting it as a graduation gift. It looks wonderful, you must have planned this for months

I love it, it's beautiful.

Oooh... I am envious. I have no tatoos, but if I ever get one, I'd kill to get this pattern. It does indeed look celtic. Why was tatooing illegal in your state?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pitbulllady In reply to Beboots [2006-02-20 22:39:45 +0000 UTC]

Tattooing was originally banned in South Carolina due to health concerns, back in the day before autoclaves and the use of modern, one-time-use tattoo needles. Hepatitis C was the biggest concern, with tattooist using the same needle over and over again for different people, without properly sterilizing it. It was KEPT illegal for the same reason that most businesses in this state cannot open on Sundays, or can only open from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm-the state's infamous "Blue Laws"-a code of laws written, and put into effect, when the state was still a British colony, based on the religious practices of the day when there was no such thing as "separation of Church and State". For some reason, these laws are still on the books in South Carolina, and still enforced, and still supported by most residents. The Book of Leviticus in the Bible, which outlines JEWISH religious law, prohibits tattooing or putting other marks upon one's body. This same Book also prohibits eating pork or men shaving their beards or cutting their sideburns, or anyone wearing clothing made of different kinds of materials, yet for some reason, the legistlators who used it for decades to support the moral ban on tattooing have no problems with eating bacon, shaving their faces, cutting their hair short or wearing clothes made of cotton and polyester blends. A referendum finally passed a couple of years ago, when one key opponent in our state House of Representatives got to visit an illegal tattoo parlor set up in a basement and see the filth and squalor for himself, filth and squalor that was the direct result of the practice being forced "underground" by the law, and realized that the only way to make it safe was to make it legal. However, as is typical for South Carolina's lawmakers, after repealing the ban on tattooing, they have yet to work out specifics like health inspection requirements, zoning restrictions, etc., and until they do that, no one can legally tattoo anyone. They also threw in a legal loophole in the repeal, which allows any county or municipality to inact its own ban on tattooing, under "home rule", and many counties and towns rushed to do just that, again, based mainly on the Book of Leviticus' prohibition of tattoos.
