Description Update(Jan-18-14)
Hyde got a complete overhaul. This was something I've wanted to do for a long while now but never quite felt I had the right parts to get the job done right. I finally got the push I needed to pull this lanky dude off the "Plague Doctors" shelf and revamp him after getting The Hobbit: Barrel Escape . I then completely revisited every aspect o Hyde.

The new updates include
  • Improved designs overall
  • Cleaned up color scheme.
  • Added Dark Tan throughout his body and Dark Brown to his hat.
  • Added the wine barrels and goblet "accessories."
  • Changed his eye color from Trans-red to Trans-orange(Amber as I call it).
  • Rebuilt most of the arms and legs.
  • reshaped torso(crotch and back mostly)
  • Rebuilt his staff making it studier.
  • Made him a bit taller.

About The MOC

Here's yet another MOC I did in about a day. This time is a Fusion MOC, using System parts and technic/bionicle. Woohoo. I Technically only have one other Fusion MOC, the Reta-Sarka-V12 I've accomplished a few things I've always wanted to do with this MOC, and they are:
  • Build a very lanky "standard size" style MOC, but simply elongate and exaggerate the proportions. I was thinking of doing this by making my own version of Treebeard or a generic Ent From Lord Of the Rings. But I got to that item on the checklist with "Nales" here.
  • Make a Scarecrow. I didn't really have any distinction as to whether it'd be a benevolent scare crow, or an evil one like what's more popular nowadays. This one is the first.
  • Use brown and Tan parts as the main color scheme. I tried to do this on Atlas to a small extent, but didn't really fully incorporate the color Tan.
  • Build a fusion MOC figure. As stated, I had done a fusion MOC once before, but not a figure.

I guess in a somewhat subconscious manner, this MOC had been given a fair amount of thought before building it.
One giant icon cookie to anyone who can figure out which part I used as the basis for his body. I'll give you a hint, it is indeed a system part, its tan, and you can make out the angle of it on either side of his torso. Its a pretty unusual part to.
The printed piece on his chest is supposed to represent a glowing from inside his chest.
Also, I'm aware of his Sheppard's stick being flimsy and bent slightly. Its made of axels being held together by the tubes and connected with axle connectors.
Interesting piece of trivia is that Hyde's(Or Autumnales') head is more or less what I wanted to change Matteo's head to, to make it more proportionate to his body without his mask or hat. I would have substituted some of the colors to fit his color scheme, leaving just the face in tan.

Bio(also updated on Jan-18-14)
Hyde as he's commonly referred to is a benevolent spirit of the harvest. He only appears in the mortal world during the autumn months when it is harvest season. Hyde's existence dates as far back to when humans began farming and cultivating the lands they inhabited for sustainability. This makes him very old. So old in fact, only other immortal beings know his true name, Autumnales. IRL this means "Late Autumn" in Latin. He is referred to as "Hyde" by mortals and in mortal legend for his mischievous nature to hide from people or hide small possessions from mortals in unusual places for his own amusement.

Hyde's overall purpose in the mortal world is to protect the balance of nature and human's interactions with it. How he does this comes in several forms. His main device is to bestow good or ill fortunes on humans to either reward them or punish them for their practices. He often will simply appear to farmers off in the distance in their fields. When he appears on a sunny day this is an omen of good will and that next years harvest will do well, if he appears on an overcast or stormy day, this is to be taken as a bad omen and a warning to the farmer to change their ways for it upsets the balance of nature. In extreme cases where the mortal committing the imbalance will not change Hyde will go so far as to beckon evil spirits to the farmer to bestow them with misfortune. This can be as tame as a series of bad luck, to crops and cattle dying, and even as extreme as the death of family members or death to the mortal themselves. By the same token mortals blessed with his approval will see good fortune and harvest, and Hyde will ward away evil spirits.

Because humans cultivate the lands they inhabit to survive, Hyde views the cutting down of trees and other plants as a necessity to the balance, yet it is when humans over extract without returning what was taken that he will then take action. The relationship he must maintain is the give and take from nature. Humans who take from the land and make no effort to renew it are the ones who are punished. It is ultimately up to the mortal to interpret the signs being given and know they must change or maintain their course of action. Hyde cannont make a human change, they must want to themselves.

Hyde celebrates and enjoys the fruits of the harvest. It is said that if a nearby barrel of wine or a wheel of cheese comes up missing, then it is of the finest quality, for Hyde has taken some for himself to sample. When visited in good will, he is seen holding a barrel of wine in one arm and a golden goblet in the other, offering a toast of achievement and good will towards the mortal he's visiting. If holding his Shepard's staff, it is a sign that that person has strayed from the path and must change their ways. However those who can see spirits of their own accord and not just when those spirits want to appear to mortals can see him hiking across the land, staff in hand and wine in the other. If he is approached in a friendly manner he almost always stops and offers a glass of wine and some form of food(often bread, cheese or cured meats).

Hyde himself is a very reclusive and passive aggressive spirit. He seldom makes close contact with mortals with the exception of those who have strong connections to the spiritual world and those he befriends, Matteo is both of these. Hyde is also a very quit individual, only making a high pitched "oooo" sound to convey emotion. This can turn into a loud growling sound to those who have provoked him. When he does make contact with humans from the material world he likes to engage in hide and seek, giving him his nickname to those who know him. His relationship with Matteo is a unique one in the sense that Matteo is one of few humans who are immortal, and maintains balance with and respects nature. He also seldom acts on his own. When he must act against a human he doesn't physically harm them himself, he will call upon a malicious spirit to do it himself. Though, if he must ward away a spirit that will not simply obey his wishes he will then call upon a combative spirit to drive off the evil one. This seldom happens as most spirits, even evil ones respect his wishes Hyde takes no side in anyone's quarrels. Hyde is a truly peaceful character who knows no foe. He is sometimes known as "The beckoner of masters" in the spiritual world for he only calls upon those skilled at their crafts, whether they be good or evil. Hyde has many names he is known by though.

Well thanks again for the critique.

Like we already discussed, System MOCs often rub bioMOCers the wrong way, so a lot of this isn't a surprise to me. I do however just want to point out that his legs were meant to be very long. I am surprised at what you said about his face though. I think it looks very human like. The last part about how he looks mentor like, I can see that. To me he gives off an "ent meets Abraham Lincoln" vibe. So maybe that's where the mentor vibe comes in.

No problem

Yeah I see why you made the legs long, but the anatomy of the MOC is a little odd because of that.

As an overall "grade", I think this one deserves a 1/10 or perhaps a 2/10

the build itself is very bad. the overall uneven armoring and the lack of attention to detail make this moc suffer. the build looks very simple (which sometimes works. but not this time) and the blending of system and bionicle looks lazy to me.

vision:
was nice, but it didnt look like you had the "full picture" before you began to build; it looks improvised. the proportions are odd (yes, i knw you wanted them to be, but the thighs are way too ling in comparison with the shins) and the hat was too simple, oddly colored, and far too tall for any practical use.

the originality:
was one of the crations only strong points, and i rather like the concept but the ideas presented are done so in a very sloppy way.

technique:
the blending of system and bionicle in this moc is sloppy, and the moc is lacking a defined detail. the ankles, the shins, the feet, the thighs, and the body all need a complete overhaul.
the feet do not incorperate any clever piece combinations and they look like you just threw a handful of parts together in the best way you could while still retaining some degree of stability. those feet are gappy, and akward in appearance. the shins are, again, sloppy and lacking in defined shape. the shins are just a couple of limb pieces with some system smashed together (it looked like you were just trying to throw more system in there to make it coherent with the rest of the moc, and you didnt pay attention to shape while doing so) those ankles are skinny and boring. the thighs are very bad. the thighs are far too simple and lack shape; they look loke big blocks with NO shape. they are simple, TOO defined and waaaaaay too blocky, not to mention that those tubes sticking out of the legs are out of place. the torso looks boring and blocky, again, the giant system blocks are making this moc look bad. you need to give the moc more shape and less block, and those circular plates all over the place are strange looking and out of place. also, the arms are simple, but better than the rest of the moc.

Impact:
when i saw this one, i thought "nice effort, but you still fail at shaping, sorry dude"

dont take this as a piece of spam or a troll message, i'm just being completely truthful, and if i offended you, woooooops

Hi Gong. Thanks for these critiques. I have to say I was almost going to rate these as unfair, but I'll go ahead and rate em as fair. Critiques aren't always "OMG you did this so well" I understand that. However, you're saying things that as a general consensus, most haven't said about either of these MOCs. I'm not gonna disregard what you said, and again I thank you for the feedback. I'll definitely keep it in mind. But I do kinda have to call what was said into question, as well as who said it. I honestly would be able to take your advice much more to heart if I knew you were a MOCer and one with any skill. So I ask, do you have any MOCs you can post? Its like they say "often the best sailors are those without ships."

I'm gonna make a journal spotlighting your critiques and will be asking others to support or disprove what you said. I'm glad to get some critical feedback , I just have to question the validity of it.

well, i switched accounts here, and i have indeed begun to delve into the making of mocs, when i finish my creation, i'll post it and link it to you.

i rate these by comparing them with other mocs on other sites, and that is why they were low. if i were rating this according to DA standards, it would have been at least a 3 star moc.

Ah I see. Well you may want to post some stuff soon.

Okay that makes a bit of sense to. Ther's a lot of really neat MOCs on Flickr, but as a general rule of thumb, I see those MOCers go about MOCing a little differently than I do. A lot of MOCers seem to be interested in aesthetics and not as much about functionality, where as I try to go right down the middle for both, aesthetics and functionality and structure. That's just my approach. I stick a little truer to the original concept of bionicle, functioning figures and things that look cool. I've been a fan since 2001. I was 11 years old when that came out, so for me I'm just sticking to the core tenants of bionicle. I don't knock what others do with MOCing, that's some great stuff they come up with, it just doesn't work for me.

you need not sacrifice good looks for good stability. many mocers do both.

you dont need to be a mocer to critique the shape or proportionism of a moc

im willing to let you have the first one but the second stays true.

why do have to moc to be able to say "these proportions look sunny" or "his arm is too blocky"

any one could make these simple observations

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Taka-Sonatchi-Bii [2012-08-22 07:41:52 +0000 UTC]

Because sometimes in MOCing those things are done on purpose or its the simple nature of using blocky plastic parts to create the vision you have, and only a MOCer would know if there's a better way to make that work and would be able to recommend different parts.

I talked to people about your critique, and I still am grateful for it. But all you did was point out what was wrong, you didn't give any advice for how things could be fixed. As cave shinobi said, there was no "thread to hold on to." And only a MOCer is going to know how something that isn't done well on a MOC can be executed better. A non-MOCer critiquing a MOC would be like someone who speaks German trying to critique English poetry.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Taka-Sonatchi-Bii In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2012-08-22 10:21:34 +0000 UTC]

why would you try to tell someone to use a different part instead of telling them the problem so that they can fix it how THEY see fit? building styles in which the indoskeletons are so simple that any mocer can come along and say "i think you should use this piece instead of this one" are often bad <:L

look, im not going to hold your hand, and im not going to sugarcoat things. you have some problems with the builds(just like every mocer), but im not going to hold your hand and tell you which parts you should use and where. i tried to focus on shape, so you could find your own, CREATIVE solutions and you dont need to be a mocer to do that.

the vast differences and slangs that belong to each of the worlds languages are far more complicated than basic shape. a child can point out flaws in basic shape.

Well I'm not gonna tell them what to do I'll make recommendations.

You know, none of this has been helpful I've actually had to go and ask other people what they thought because I found your critiques so immensely confusing and just bad. I don't know if you know this...but I do kinda know what I'm doing when it comes to MOCing. I don't really need your brand of barely useful and without basis advice. My commenters agreed your critiques weren't very good and just came off as you being a dick and tearing down my MOCs instead of giving constructive criticism. I don't even know why I'm having this argument with you. I don't even know you, I've seen nothing from you that proves there's any merit to what you're saying. Thanks for the barely relevant, barely constructive feedback, but I'm just gonnna drop this conversation.

Well it's that time when I get to write a critique for one of my fav DA mocers.
To start with I have to say that it has a huge impact when you first see it. The overall layout is quite good as it shows detailed images on the entire moc aswel as displaying articulation (sitting down) and a form of scaling (beside Matteo).
The colour scheme works beautifully for the whole moc and gives it that whole relaxed and peaceful tone making the being seem malevolent and kind rather than an imposing being that would strike fear into many. The colour for the background is perfectly chosen as it's almost like leaves for an Autumn effect adding to the tranquility and quant beauty of the piece.
The overal build is quite magnificent in itself. The fusion of technic and brick pieces here work seamlessly together to form and overal roundded shape provided by the bricks with also technic detailing to enhance specific areas. The head itself is very impressive as the simple arrangments of a few small blocks make a wonderful little face and the red eyes, while normally made to seem imposing, work well against the tans and browns of the moc.
Overall it lives up to the great expectations of 3rdeye88 fans and delivers the attention to detail and originality we all love to see and admire. Well done on another fantastic piece mate.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to The-Dapper-Scrapper [2012-07-31 23:37:24 +0000 UTC]

WOW this one got really high scores from you, thanks Fenrek!

I don't mean to be a grammar Nazi, but you mean "Benevolent." Benevolent is the opposite of malevolent, which is mean and evil. I'm really glad you mentioned the background. I think that really pulls together the look and vibe I was going for with Hyde. Because most people only see him during the autumn so he'd be standing around in fields with those kinds of colors. Its actually a picture of a corn field. This is what I used. I just resized it to fit the dimensions of the layout.
I wasn't sure how the flow of bionicle and technic into system went I felt it was a little choppy at first but as I added system parts to the more bionicle heavy sections I felt better about it. I actually created a face very similar to this in LDD a while back. Once I knew what I was building I knew I was gonna use that. Luckily I had the parts in tan to do it. Thank you old star wars sets. I actually still have quite a lot of brown and tan system parts. Maybe I'll try making furniture so Matteo has a cool chair to sit in or something.

THough I'm surprised no one's actually said anything about the photo of Matteo taking his hat and him looking for it. Which was supposed to be ironic because that's what Hyde does with everyone else's stuff. But also it was a chance to take Hyde's hat off to show the head more clearly. Overall I think this is actually my favorite edit yet. I love the colors of the background working with those of the MOC, it makes me feel very at peace staring at it all. The fall is my favorite season of the year and is when I feel most at peace. I feel like I can breath a sigh of relief because fall is back and winter is on its way.

Thanks for the compliment Simeon. I'm glad you like his everything cept his feet. I agree that they're a bit bigger than I would have liked, but this was the only way I could get a shaping that I really liked. So I made his feet a bit bigger so that they could at least look pretty good, and I think they do. They have an old timey shoe look to them I think. Also, have you ever noticed how Most BioMOCers build completely symmetrical feet a lot of the time? Not many people make the inside of the foot stick out further like feet actually do. I'm sure there'e exceptions to this. I can't be the only one who's done this, but I can't recall seeing anyone else's MOCs with feet that have any indication of a big toe or the actual shape a foot has.

Even though they do make his feet kinda big, I feel that's a little justified with how freakin' tall this guy is. I'm 6.2 and have 121/2 long feet. I know foot length is typically relative to actual height.

That's why I like it so much It actually reminds me of a story I heard once. Supposedly the once tallest man in the world died when a shoe-nail from his custom huge shoes stabbed him.

Well it was like in the 19th century of something. I think he got infected and they weren't able to treat that kind of stuff back then

Oh I see. That makes sense. Well there's no nails in Hyde's shoes, so he'll be alright.

I'm only now seeing that little smily face, that's an amazing touch. Like L.A. said, I really like how this is a Brown and Tan titan, you don't see those that often. I like the leg shaping, and the strange blockiness of the arms. The parts choice for the torso is great, that spot on his chest almost looks like a heart light. I quite like his bio, the idea behind him is fun and original.

Thank you Brickins. I'm glad you like him to. The part on his chest is one of my favorite things about him because I took a printed part from a star wars set and turned it into something completely different. That's not always an easy thing to do, but I found that part lent itself well to this MOC and the idea behind it. It had a warm glow aspect to it that seemed really fitting.

I'm glad you like the bio to. Hell I'm glad someone took the time to even read the bio. I completely rewrote it as well.
