Description About the MOC
Grayskayl was a MOC I just kinda made randomly by experimenting with my system elements(in lamens terms regular Legos). I noticed I had an abundance of dark grey and light grey from all the star Wars Sets and Bionicle playsets, so that's how the gradient color scheme came about. Its not the first time a gradient color scheme has been done, but its a first for me, and another box on the list checked off. Grayskayl is partly inspired by old 1950's style robots and Iron Giant The more I got this MOC built the more interesting it got, I knew that it could very easily go in a few different directions. I thought about making it a sad robot, with droopy shoulders and a frowning face, but I decided to go more towards more neutral or slightly on the happier side of neutral "disposition." Either way, it all seemed kinda cliche, or like its been done. The iron Giant was happy and playful which was what inspired me to make Grayskayl that way to. Then there's Marvin Who was hilariously depressed. Then one simply needs to recal terminators, The Matrix, or Battlestar Galactica or any slew of other things to find evil robots. Either way I could have portrayed him, its been done before, so I went with the one that seemed most suitable for him.
Grayskayl also marks my third major system oriented build after Matteonette and Hyde/Autumnales

Bio
GraySkayl Is an adventurous rebellious robot. Built as an analytical and mechanical operations unit, he worked in dull boring laboratories, assisting with experiments and maintaining and repairing equipment. He never realized how boring and dull his existence was since he never knew anything else outside of the facility. Grayskayl diligently performed his tasks, listened to every command and was a good little robot worker, until one day while in his recharging cycle, his sensors detected unregistered movement. A small green crab like creature had burrowed its way through the outer wall into the laboratory. Grayskayl's inherently programmed curiosity told him to investigate further, so a small burrowed hole became a gaping hole in the wall. Grayskayl had set himself free. Not knowing any other life forms besides the professor that built him, Grayskayl quickly befriended the little crab who had shown him the way out. They became the best of friends to. The little crab, which Grayskayl affectionately dubbed as "snip" from the auditory signals its claws made would show him new and interesting things for him to collect data on, and Grayskayl would protect snip from harmful entities in the world.
It wasn't long before the professor wanted his very valuable, very unique robot back. At first it was just a few men, but when these men failed to retrieve the robot because it had a clever little friend to help it get away, soon the professor sent another robot. A large red and black robot, that shot fire from its hands. This Robot was not like Grayskayl, it had no curiosity, no interest in small living things being its friend, It was only interested in achieving its objective, which was to find Grayskayl and bring it back home...

Yeah, I was going for a kind of kid's story on that one. Meh. .

MOCs featured in this Deviation:
Snip
And a mysterious red fire robot.

Gonna do things in reverse order a little bit. Read my latest journal about the Pohatu revamp. I did see it, it's in the BML gallery. I know its there. I glanced at it earlier today. Thought it was a tad weird looking, but I'll have to give it a proper study to give some worthwhile feedback.

Okay. I think you might be confusing a little bit of what I was going for. Think more like Retro modern robot and that's Grayskayl. He's not meant to be completely retro. Its all more of just a hat tip to those kinds of robots. Also, Grayskayl just kinda happened. There wasn't much planning, as opposed to the other MOC which I have given a lot of forthought, hence the poll I made. I was wondering how often MOCers plan things out, or just make it up as the go along. This was a *dumps out system parts* "okay, what should I do with this crap, well, I've got a lot of the grey colors, hmmm maybe a grey scale MOC." Then that came the gradient idea, and then it just turned into a retroish robot as I started building from the legs up.

I have to say I'm a little disappointed in where you rated impact and the complexity of this MOC, its mostly system parts with only a minor splash of bionicle for movement, but that chest is actually rather complex and was a total bitch to work with. I was hoping this would have more of an impact seeing as I'm really not a system MOCer, I hardly ever work with it. So this to me is a big accomplishment as a MOCer. It pushed my abilities of MOCing in a different area further. Before I felt like I got kinda luckish with Matteonette and Hyde, but this to me cements in my mind that if I want to build a figure out of system I can do it and it come out well. Now I just need to see if I can build other things in system. What things I have no idea, but I should definitely push myself as a system MOCer as well as bionicle/HF.

I understand what your getting at and I find the rating system a bit off. Believe me, I like this MOC a lot; but impact does not sum up the feeling I had after viewing it. And then with technique, I rated it in places where it could improve, not were it needed improvement.

Aren't those two kinda the same thing?
I dunno it just had a lot of impact on me, as I was building it. So the fact it had little impact on you was kind of disappointing. Maybe its just because I don't work with system much, so the fact I was able to pull it off this well using system has a profound impact on me.

To tell you the truth, I did not know you were pretty new to system MOCing, so that was a lack of discretion on my part. I should have let the personal accomplishment kick in, had I known.
Forgive my cynicism. (no sarcasm intended)

Hehe its alright. Well just look at my gallery. Do you see it over flowing with system MOCs, and the few that are in there, do they span any kind of conceptual gap? Not at all. I've managed to use sytem for Figure building, and for detailing on the Reta Sarka. As it was it took a day of *dumped out system parts* "well what the fuck am I gonna do with all this shit? " I use it in small amounts to detail my bionicle MOCs. The little parts(greebles) I can easily find a use for, but bigger stuff I'm at a loss for. As it is I've got this abundance of large system parts that'd probably be great for buildings or structures or who know's what that I'm still trying to wrap my head around using. You saw my journal with the picture of my system piles right?

ok i have to make my usual informative comment
so FYI
LEGO is never spelled Lego
and is never used plural
i guess you could say LEGOs but i dont think thats proper either.
i think your just supposed to leave the "s" off and say "regular LEGO"
always all caps cause it stands for something, so its never lowercase
you can tell idk about spelling other wise, but i found that out while doing a research paper in high school so its kinda a pet peeve now!
ok im done! feel free to ignore me!
and yes i havnt read the rest of your description yet

Fuck that. I'll say legos cause that's what I feel like and fuck saying LEGO that doesn't seem right unless lego is actual an acronym which it isn't. Its a dutch contraction of Le got or somehting like that. Its late, I'm tired and don't wanna look it up.

Yeah. it is Leg Goht" I left out the H. Its funny, I don't think most people realize Lego is Dutch. They always seem surprised when I tell them it is. Like my dad and grandmother were surprised to hear about that. Lego's are so huge that I think people think they're American or some other major country. But nope, little ol Denmark is responsible.

Thanks. I wish this coulda counted for the theme switch challenge on MOC pages. I made a bionicle MOC with system. Not quite the theme switch they were suggesting I think. But it wasn't allowed I don't think. Oh well. I don't really have it in me to do a contest every month. Not against those MOCers. If I MOCcycled, sure, but Its not worth it to me.

st3vethesquid In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2013-01-19 16:37:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, theme switch meant use Bionicle to emulate a System theme. And it's tough, but that's not gonna stop me from getting 3rd overall >: D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to st3vethesquid [2013-01-20 05:19:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but it woulda been cool had they allowed system to emulate a bionicle theme. Oh well I was past the due date anyways, and I doubt I'd be able to compete all year in each challenge. I'm a slow MOCer, can't rush my process.

Thanks Greg.

When you gonna get back to some rendering or art of your own? You've been very inactive. You know what I'd like to see from you? I'd Like to see you actually invest some time on one thing. not just shell something out in a day or two, but actually muster up some patience and really work at something. I wanna see you pour some blood sweat and tears into a project and have that end result that is longer to get to, but much more satisfactory than the one offs you do.
I think that if you did that more often, you'd really grow as an artist and hone a skill to the level of those where we pick our jaws up off the floor at what an amazing job they did. You're a good graphic artist and I've seen you expand, but I don't think you've really grown as an artist in the time I've known you. You've dabbled in a few things here and there, though it seems like you're kind of stagnant in terms of what you do, when you do something at all(that we get to see). I see a lot of the same stuff from you. I think you have a lot of potential Greg, but you gotta push yourself to realize it. I hope you don't mind me saying all this, I'm just trying to give you a bit of that push.

Quote-"Grayskayl quickly befriended the little crap who had shown him the way out."= ROFLMAO! XD [Notice the word crap.]

And now, on to the MOC! The overall look of this character is pretty awesome. I absolutely love the arms and torso. They just really have an appeal to me. The upper legs are pretty good as well.

Compared to the rest of the MOC in my opinion, I think the lower legs and feet take away from the rest of the MOC for not being even somewhat complex or greebled, as far as I could tell. I see where you were going with the head. As a head itself it isn't bad, but for some reason the face just creeps the hell out of me. I mean I literally had a shiver shoot up my spine as soon as I saw it, because it was so unnerving, lol.

Like I said overall this is a great MOC, and all that matters is whether or not you like it.

FAWK! K, fixed it.

Thanks Simeon. I absolutely love that torso. I'm so happy with how it came out and the over all look of it, even if it was a bitch and a half to work with.

You know I noticed that, and I figured it was alright. That happened as a result of working from the bottom up. As I got higher, he got progressively more complicated. But now I think if I added anything it'd just be useless clutter. I suppose I could go back and maybe mimic the lower arms withe lower legs between the rock raidder wheel and the knee. I've got those booster engine type parts in black. The feet and lower legs were done early on in the build before anything was really defined. I just knew at that point I was making a figure from system.

This guy, is awesome. I love the feel he has, and the all over look to him. I have only one nitpick, and that is that the knees seem unusually small... It's might just be me, but they seem out of place being so small. Maybe adding a tire around them would help? Beyond that though, I have no problems with this. It is great

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Gale-OneOfMany [2013-01-16 17:28:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Gale. I knew You'd say that. or someone would. I Stuck a tire on there, and I just didn't like it, it didn't fit the overall aesthetic. So I just left it skinny since I had to for it to connect to the system part. That's one of those situations were it was more trouble to fix it than to just let it be. Plus it messed with the movement of the knee, couldn't bend back as far.
