Description So earlier today, I did a poll asking my watchers what kind of tutorial they would like to see from me. The majority said a complete manip. walkthrough, so here it is. This is only part one, obviously, so stay tuned for the next installment.

Basically, this walkthrough is going to cover almost all of the steps I take in my manipulations. I've tried to make it as simple as possible, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Part I covers the horse. Part II will cover the background. And Part III will probably be the last, showing how to put everything together.

And yes, this is a preview of one of my upcoming manips. (It's a really simple manipulation for the sake of this tutorial, but whatever.. )

This tutorial is not to be posted anywhere without my written permission. Thanks!

How to you shine the mane?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PoeticJustice314 In reply to Bettafishy [2012-09-15 19:01:37 +0000 UTC]

I take a 3px brush (hard or soft-edged, doesn't matter) and simply paint a solid white line where I want the shine to be. Then I gaussian blur the line until it's as blurry and faded as I'd like it to be, and then put it on overlay or soft light - you can play around with the blending modes to see which looks best

What size and how much % did you use for smuding the foal?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PoeticJustice314 In reply to cavallostock [2012-09-15 19:03:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, it depends on how big your image is. I use all sorts of different sizes - some are fairly big, like for the shoulder, stomach, and rump area, and then you have to go smaller for the head and legs.

As for percentage, I usually go around 70%.

What size brush do you use for the eyes?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PoeticJustice314 In reply to redviper80 [2012-06-02 16:32:16 +0000 UTC]

To fill in the dark colored part, I probably used a 2 - 3 px brush. For the light blue highlights and stuff, I used a 1 px

May I request that you do a mane t utorial?? (For an older horse...not a foal.)

gurtagon [2011-11-21 19:25:51 +0000 UTC]

1. How did you add a shine to the mane?
2. What size brush did you use for the mane & tail?
3. Should I do the tail on a diffrent layer??
4. Love you tut!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PoeticJustice314 In reply to gurtagon [2011-11-22 15:05:56 +0000 UTC]

I use a small hard brush, ranging from 1 - 2 px for the mane and tail. When adding shine, I take a pure white and just draw a horizontal line where I want the shine to be. Then I gaussian blur it, and either set it on overlay, softlight, or lower the opacity.

You don't have to do the tail on a different layer, as it's not going to affect your manipulation. But it's your choice.

gurtagon In reply to PoeticJustice314 [2011-11-22 15:36:52 +0000 UTC]

okay! Thank you!
BUT, the 1-2 px on the program I use is like, messed up... I use sumo paint. It's freee
& pixlr.com/editor, but I only do my manipulations there, and the smduging, etc. on sumo paint.

When I smudge the horse it looks very weird so how do you do it like you do? It looks so good then I do it and it looks weird and odd.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PoeticJustice314 In reply to 17107 [2011-06-07 22:32:47 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. All I can really say is practice, practice.

What exactly looks odd about it? Does the bone or muscle structure not look right, or something else? If you post a screenshot or example, maybe I can help you better

17107 In reply to PoeticJustice314 [2011-06-10 14:28:58 +0000 UTC]

I figured it out. It just over smudged the horse but I was doing it wrong. Thanks tho!

This is great! I do wish there was more of a mane tutorial in it though. Would you ever consider doing one on manes and tails? Long/Medium length.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PoeticJustice314 In reply to ErikaChristine [2011-04-18 16:41:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I didn't want to spend too much time going over manes and tails, only because it's a complete walkthrough and I didn't want to put the focus on any one topic.

But sure, I'll definitely try to get a hair tutorial up at some point.

Thanks!
