His voice was low and sultry, roughly edging at the end of each of his words. You could almost feel him smirk at times when he spoke to you oh-so gently, his hands caressing the back of your nimble palms. His touch, albeit rough and bristly, startlingly soothed you - but it didn't block your longing to see his piercing blue hues. You feigned a smile towards the direction where you felt your lover's presence, hoping to ease his anxiety.

"I'm all right, Erwin."

You could almost sense the droop of his smile. His large hands squeeze around yours, his breaths deepening. "Don't lie."

"I'm not."

"(Y/N)."

The stern, rigorous shift in his voice meant his utmost sincerity. However, widening your grin, you ran your fingers along the back of his knuckles and sat up in your bed. You pressed your chapped lips against his hand, placing it against your cheek. "It's okay, Erwin. I don't need you to be worried about me when you clearly have better things to do."

His thick eyebrows furrowed and his frown dredged further, but you didn't notice. "Is that what you really think, (Y/N)? That you're not important to me?"

"Of course not," you shook your head, slowly dropping his hand onto the sheets that concealed your lap. "but you have paperwork to finish. Bodies to count from this past expedition. Deliver condolences to families. Recruit new members..." shaking your head, you sighed. "And here you are, watching my surroundings for me."

The man, much to his demise, did not have a response for you.

Oh, but he wished he did.

Instead, he scooted himself closer to the edge of the bed and continued to run his fingers along your hand, letting you know that he will still remain by your side. No words were spoken, but it wasn't necessary at the moment.

"Erwin, I'm not going to tell you again," you laughed in attempt to lighten the atmosphere. "You don't need to be here all day, everyday. Go, take a break. Finish paperwork that you haven't touched in... ages, I presume. Have someone bring you coffee, or, hell, even ale! When was the last time you had a nice, sturdy drink?"

"Goodness, (Y/N), I--"

"Don't you dare say what I think you're going to say, Erwin Smith," you abruptly interrupted the man. Without further ado, you continued. "Don't let my blindness get in a the way of your work. This is the life of the Survey Corps; you either sit and loaf around, or pick up the pieces and dig yourself through. Jeez," you sighed heavily, but an impish grin curved your lips. "I can't believe I'm telling you - Commander Erwin - these things. Tsk, I'm disappointed in you."

There was a pause.

And it prolonged into minutes of silence.

Ah, but not much to Erwin's surprise, you shattered it.

You reached your hand out, slowly finding your way from his knees up to his torso, slithering your torpid digits up to his shoulders, and sliding to his cheeks. Your fingers examined his structure. Your thumbs grazing against his chin, in which had the slightest stubble growing. The tips of your index fingers were around his perfectly chiseled cheekbones - oh, how you have ogled at those various times prior. You obviously couldn't see, but Erwin's icy blue eyes closed and relaxed under your touch.

Your fingers reached to his nose.

The corners of his eyes.

His temples.

His forehead.

The tousled tufts of golden hair.

Then they slid down to his thinned lips.

You cupped his face, finding your way to his lips and planted a deep kiss. He willingly obliged, his hands limply placed at the apex of your hips. The kiss deepened and deepened every second that passed, growing fervid and passionate. To tease the man, your teeth nibbled on the bottom of his lip, tugging it and offering him a tiny giggle.

He emitted a low groan - not of lust, but unadulterated passion and love. His hands squeezed your hips, roaming them up and down your sides and kissing you back with equal amount of passion and yearning you gave him.

It was bliss.

He pulled away, not wishing to further himself with his excitement. Pressing his forehead against yours, he took that point to catch his breath. You smiled, leaning in to peck him on where ever your lips landed. Unbeknownst to your initial attempts, it landed at the tip of his nose. You chuckles, and all he could do was beam.

But his joy did not last too long.

"(Y/N)..." he whispered, fingers skittering up to the crook of your neck and the beginnings of your cheek. His smile tumbled to a broad frown. "I almost lost you."

You nodded in acknowledgement. "I know..."

The great Commander Smith, who was known to keep his head up high and shoulders broad, nearly broke into hysterics when he found you limp on the grassy plains beyond the walls. The great Commander Smith, who gave strict orders and valuable advice, frantically tried to find a way to aid your pain and incoming blindness.

He placed his forehead at your shoulder, strong arms wrapping around your torso. "Damn it, (Y/N), we almost lost each other..." the man quivered and gripped onto you as if you would disappear in his touch. "You were almost gone... You were almost gone..."

You embraced your lover back, managing to find his forehead, planted a kiss on top to appease his sorrow. Broken, aching sobs tore through his body. It was foreign to feel and listen to him wail, but the most you could do was to be there for him. And, in that case, it was the only thing Erwin wanted you to be.

You gently rocked the damaged man in your arms, consoling him with compassionate, yet incoherent words.

And for that moment, for as long as you were to be able to touch him, you could almost see him one last time...
