Description Wooden armor heavily based on the ancient chinese/pacific northwest armor of similar make [link] . There are key differences, though - the wooden collar, instead of serving as part of a robust helmet, is a neck-guard and breastplate, designed to deflect and block a spear-stab or atlatl dart. The use of mouth-held weapons means that a heavy helmet would most likely inhibit weapon use, so there is none. The wooden/bone slats are held together with strips of leather, stouter loops of which hold each section to the next.

i love the snarling maw on his collar but looking at this again, i noticed that his beak makes it look like a long human nose to go with that mouth, which makes me think of how lots of cultures would depict fearsome faces in helmets and other war-gear.  was that a deliberate aesthetic choice by this dinosauroid culture?

Would they need another dinosaurid to put on their armor, or how are they going to put anything on themselves?

What I enjoy most about this project are those little cultural touches you put into the dinosauroids' costumes. Great armor design.

Thanks, man - I've been working hard to keep a feeling of reality with these creatures. Having little touches like designs on the armor helps that a lot.

Neat! It's nice to see non-anthropomorphic technology for a change!

I really am loving the development of their civilization. Are you planning to stop at a point and focus on the lifestyles of cultures all around the globe, or to continue into the "future" with their technological development?

I think I'll have to - otherwise this project will get WAY out of hand. I'm thinking of maybe aztec levels of technology, then world exploration.

This is one of the mst beautiful nd appealing artworks ive ever seen. It makes me feel like running around in the forests like a dinosauroid lol. U mentioned the lack of helmets for weapons. I wonder if u cud perhaps combine a weapon and a helmet? like have a helmet which barces against their shoulders nd neck with two tusk like spears on either side, so they wnt break their necks from the impact of fighting with their mouths. Or even just have a helmet which runs from teh tip of the beak up to the base of the neck, made of lamellar like segments to reinforce the very beak itself yet still provide flexibility. I wonder if u cud even jst give them wooden goggles like the inuit used for shielding against splinetrs from teh spear. Jst a thought as i aquired a few splinters in my eye when cutting wood a few days ago. Well thankyou once again for posting this
Peace out chief

Thanks for the compliment. I've designed the war-beak as a helmet-weapon, but that's been it so far. I have to say, though, tusk-spears would look wicked...

really cool!
And unlike other people's attempts at intelligent dinosaurs, you dinosauroid looks both intelligent and like a dinosaur, which I think is important.

Thanks. I feel exactly the same way - why would a dinosaur walk like an ape?

Ah once more fairly cool design. I could well see a group of these guys heading off into battle. Very neat. But on the note of weapons it would be cool to see a Dinosauroid using some. Also perhaps give something for the arms to do combat wise. I can certainly think of curved daggers as decent weapons for these guys when it comes to close range. Just a thought.

The design on the collar is my favorite part; very Poly or Pacific Northwestish. Great stuff.

Thanks, man. I grew up in NW canada, so I've always loved this stuff - they never teach you how cool the native empires of the pacific northwest were, only that they made cedar canoes and whitey conquered them. There's so much fascinating culture (haida, tlingit) that we never learned (in grade school) because of political correctness, which only focuses on the (albeit more tragic) more recent history of the pacific northwest - residential schools and the like.
(on a side note, the beast on the collar is a false-bear, I figure.)

I can relate, I went to public school too and we got pretty much the same cursory rap on Native Americans. Tragic stuff indeed, breeding apathy in school children through apathetic lesson plans. A discussion for another time, however.

False-bear is an awesome beast to put on the collar, I can see a lot of dinosauroid cultures idolizing various species of big, brutish, carnivorous animals that gave their ancestors incessant shit over the course of their evolution. Just like us . Dinosauroid false-berserkergang? I say fuck to the yeah.

povorot In reply to Social-Animal [2009-03-06 14:24:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh, dinosaur berserkers? I hadn't even thought of that shit!
In thinking of animals that gave hominids shit, I have to figure out a hyena analogue - something that's been at odds with the dinosauroid for it's whole evolution, and is smart enough to be a real problem...

Hallucinating shock troopers make EVERYTHING cooler. There is no denying that.

Maybe a relative of the false-bear took to a Hyena like lifestyle and appearance. May be too obvious though, not sure.
