I stopped breathing for a second when I saw this was traditional. You're great at shading. Any tips for a shading novice?

haha thanks
sure! I strongly recommend to everyone to blend as least as posible (with fingers or others instruments) because usually this leaves undesirable marks and smudges, becoming so unclean..
instead, try to get the entire gradient using only the pencils and all its different hardnesses, always starting with the hardest one and progressively overlapping softer graphites as you approach to the darker tones. try to control the desire of beginning too soon on the darker tones with soft pencils, is better if you let the intensity of the drawing increase progressively in all its surface (this is hard for me too)
I used to blend with my fingers too much and it was so messy haha this method I told you has given me the best results so far.. but don't take it too strictly, everyone has their own method with which they feel comfortable, so you can use your fingertips, paper or instruments to blend if you feel comfortable with it (that's the key, feeling comfortable .. beyond that it's all about patience)
