My attempt to reconstruct the Jurassic ammonite Perisphinctes.
Most ammonites are reconstructed with errors! In this drawing, I tried to avoid them (and probably replaced with other ones).
- Firstly, the shell was certianly not stone colored when animal was alive (as it often appears in reconstructions). It became stone colored after it was fossilized. What was the color of the shell in life? We do not know. I inspired shell colors on the colors of sea fish and snails.
- Secondly, most of the ammonites were planktivorous, but are reconstructed with arms typical for modern cephalopods. However, they are predatory and have arms that are completely unsuitable for catching plankton. It is not known what the ammonite arms looked like, but I based this reconstruction on a trawl fishing net.
- Thirdly, the skin texture of ammonites is often modeled on modern cephalopods with visible chromatophores for color change. This ability would not be needed by ammonites and they probably did not have large chromatophores.
- Fourthly ammonite eyes should be located at the back of its head. I didnt knew about this when drawing and it costed me two more days of correcting picture.

Edit: I changed location and size of eyes. Now it is correct. You can see how this drawing looked before with incorrect eye position here:
