Description Built Juniata Shops, 1919, the last of the western K4s'. This is probably as much of a builder's photo of a Lines West K4s as we're likely to see.  The 1919 engines differed in some details from the 1918 engines.  Power reverse gear was original equipment.  Frames were standard (1918 engines had a Commonwealth steel tail casting).  Sand box was behind the bell, as on all Lines East K4s, instead of the reverse order as on the 1918 Lines West group.  Center mount electric headlights were used on all L.W. K4s.
Because WWI was on at the time, railroads were run under control of the United States Railroad Administration.  The USRA disallowed the decorative striping normally applied to PRR passenger locomotives.  After the Pennsy regained control (1921), the striping was added as quickly as possible.  But a company consolidation eliminated the "Pennsylvania Lines" lettering in favor of "Pennsylvania".  So none of the Lines West K4s' was ever seen in the old P.L. lettering with striping.

I'd sure like to have one.  In HO scale it's do-able.

It is doable in HO, but you gotta be carful about what one you get. I’ve heard mixed things about the BLI ones. A friend of mine had one and said it was a problem child. I don’t know who else is making them right at the moment besides MTH, and I don’t know anything about those, whether they’re good or not.

Bachman and Broadway Limited. The Bachmans are better than they use to be, but the BL's are the top unless you go with brass.

Or if you can find one of the Penn Line/Bowsers that had the detail kit added. Those suckers are built like a tank and very easy to repair.

I have a Penn Line I1 and that freaking thing weighs twice as much as my Bachmann.
