Description Testing out Daz Studio 4.8 with Iray. Iray is a GPU accelerated render engine, meaning it uses the computer's CPU and graphics card to render out images. The results are pretty nice, and the time it takes to render isn't bad either. This render took roughly 23 minutes.

It has a learning curve though. Ive been playing with it all day and this was only 1 of a handful of successful renders. But this is what I have determined so far:

Pros:
Faster than Luxrender
Good quality
Can handle larger scenes

Cons
Currently unable to render hair (due to the hair program I use)
Slower than 3Delight

One reason I think its going so slow is because my graphic's card isn't anything special. Its a GT630M I think, 1 GB of memory. If I want it to go faster, or if I want to use other GPU accelerated/GPU only engines (Like Octane) I need a bigger card.

I've thought about offering this quality rendering as a commission option. It would be more expensive due to the render time and extra setup, but that extra money would go straight into savings for a newer computer. I need to learn the program a bit better before I do any commissions with it.

The card really does make the difference. When I was rendering on my old 600 series it took much longer than when i finally bit the bullet and grabbed the 970. Single character likes this are done in 5 minutes even with a bunch of lights.

Sadly I only have a laptop, so I cant fit a newer bigger card in my computer (even if I could afford the card to begin with).

Not bad!

GPU accelerated rendering is pretty neat, but yes, you need a workhorse to handle it. One of the 900 series would do you better. Even better would be a pair of them setup in SLI. But that's around $1200 to make happen. Not to mention the rest of the PC that is needed to support them. One more thing. While rendering such things, heat will be generated. The best cooling solution I have found to date is a single "squirrel cage" type fan that blows the air through the housing of the video card and out of the case. I strongly recommend that style of card when making your purchase. The cheaper ones have 2-3 fans blowing over the card. They don't cool as well and tend to saturate with heat much more easily.

I've been building PC's for several years now. If you have other questions, I don't mind answering them.

I do plan on building a computer when I have enough money, and I will certainly need help picking parts and putting it together.

Feel free to send a message when you get the money together for the build.
