Description
Therizinosaurs are some of the weirdest theropods, partly due to them being herbivorous unlike most non avian theropods. This results in their anatomy to show signs of convergent evolution to early sauropodmorphs like Plateosaurus. Both clades evolved long necks for higher foliage browsing. Interestingly they are also quite similar in anatomy to giant ratites, like Moas and Elephant birds, another group of large herbivorous theropods. This also what I based the posture of the female (left) in this picture on, keeping a low profile with a curled up neck, a posture more similar to that of emus or cassowaries, rather than the slightly straighter erected usual pose that is given to them. They, however, would also be capable of a higly erected posture to browse high up foliage, scan the surroundings and, as the male does in this case, perform a speculative mating dance, similar to a pidgeon. 90 million years ago in Mongolia, Segnosaurus would have shared its environment, the Bayan Shireh formation, with animals such as the ankylosaur Talarurus (center back) and crocodilomorphs such as Paralligator (right). During this time in the earlier upper cretaceous Angiosperms would have been spreading and diversifying such as the Cornaceae (left). While grass became wide spread as a "plain" plant only in the cenozoic, semi aquatic grasses, similar to rice evolved already 130 million years ago, which is why I included some in this reconstruction.
