Description Fluffy FΓ«anorian family time!
Mini-Maedhros, taking his daddy for a walk. Because those happy moments must have existed, right? Right?

To nobody's surprise, this was inspired by real life events. ^^

Painted at Jenny Dolfen's watercolour workshop. You can thank her for the fact that the pillars actually look three-dimensional, and that FΓ«anor is wearing this lovely red woollen tunic instead of something that's hardly discernible from the floor! Also, she saved the background - initially, I'd planned to set this in a courtyard, with a fountain and flowerpots and the like in the back. It looked wonderful before my mind's eye, but when I drew the lineart, it just looked convoluted and trying too hard. I couldn't think of what to do about it until Jenny suggested to simply put the scene from the ground floor to the fifth floor, where all you can see in the background is the sky. Simple, yet effective!

Awwwwwwww.... yes, this totally did exist. We need more moments like this. Baby Maedhros is just too cute. And I love Feanor's outfit.

I have a weakness for the untold stories of the Silmarillion - the moments of peace and *gasp* happiness before everything goes wrong. Glad that others feel the same!

I'm not entirely happy with Baby Maedhros (I really can't draw children well), but I'm quite proud of FΓ«anor's outfit. too. ^^

Me too! I love figuring out and drawing/painting all the missing moments; both happy and sad.

I'm horrible at drawing children as well. They always end up looking like hobbits.

Exactly! On both counts.

Very nice!
Although I do hope Feanor is paying close attention--I think baby Maedhros might just about fit through the gaps in those railings!

More than "just about", yes!

I'm sure FΓ«anor is going to watch out, though. After all, baby Maedhros would be his most precious creation at the time

Ja, die ruhigen Momente werden immer ΓΌbergangen - dabei muss es sie doch gegeben haben!

I absolutly love this picture!!!
Littel Maedhros is so... I have no words to put it... and Feanor as a (more or less) paitiant father... but well... if he could not stand children he would never have 7 sons... so I guess in the beginning (ere Finwes death and the forging of the Silmaril) He must be well a good father...

He supposedly was pretty popular in Tirion before the whole Silmarilli debacle (and even afterwards to some extent among those who didn't support Fingolfin), so on the whole he must have been a... hm... more socially compatible guy than fanon sometimes makes him.
I don't think his sons would've come into exile with him or followed him to Middle-earth if they hadn't loved their daddy (although I guess there are such a things as pressure and obligation. Still, I like to think that they had nothing to do with it - not predominantly, anyway)...

I guess he was... yes...
I think he was... well special and not the one who talked mutch yust to please others...
I guess the first two times they did the oath it was out of love for Feanor (the third time Curufin und Celegorm said it in Nargothrond... well... that was diffrent)

Really nice work, especially on the dimensionality of the columns. The only thing that somehow bugs me is the upper part of the picture. Judging from the way the decoration wraps around the columns, they are clearly above the viewer's eye level. But if that's the case, it's impossible that the top of the right arch is lower than the left one. Same goes for the upper decorations on the coloumns: The right one should be higher up than the left one.

There are a couple of perspective f***-ups in this one, but I hadn't even noticed the one you mentioned! *facepalms* I'm a bit unsure about it as the entire image is supposed to be slightly tilted (as you can see from the lines of the floor and the bannister) to make the whole thing a bit more dynamic, so the ceiling should be tilted as well. Not sure it works out as it is, though, either. I guess I should've made a line sketch first! >_>

Ah okay, Tilting would mean 3-point-perspective, wouldn't it? In this case you could simply emphasize the vertical lines converging to a vanishing point below the floor.

Should have, yes! But I'm not going to touch this again. But I'll certainly pay more attention to lines and perspective the next time. It's just too frustrating to look at something later on and going "Wait... that actually makes no sense"...

I know... And the peril of watercolor ist that you can't simply fix it like you could in a digital painting. :-/

Awww...Feanor as a daddy! Well, of course he was a daddy - it's just so nice to see him actually portrayed as one.

I recently found another sweet picture. It's by Ivanneth, on her website. It shows Feanor holding baby Nelyafinwe and staring off into the distance.

...because we all know that's how Jenny does backgrounds. XD

Stll love this one, Christiane. And somehow, I do discern a slight hint in FΓ«anor's face that things don't go quite fast enough for him yet.

Qitian In reply to Gold-Seven [2012-08-14 10:27:14 +0000 UTC]

I didn't - came as a revelation to me that the Great Jenny Dolfen (TM) also hates to do complicated backgrounds. I thought you did those easily!

He's probably annoyed because little Nelyo still requires a hand to hold on to instead of walking all by himself. (Truth to tell, sometimes it's bloody tiring to play walking aid to an enthusiastic toddler who has no patience for the concept of "Mommy worked all day and would like to just sit down and do some reading now". It's probably more tiring when you're thinking of all the unfinished projects in your forge! )

Gold-Seven In reply to Qitian [2012-08-14 10:46:36 +0000 UTC]

Oooooh yes. I wonder whether Elven fathers are more active in child rearing than their human counterparts. If they are, FΓ«anor must have gone crazy six times. In any case, Nerdanel certainly did go crazy those six times. Or maybe an Elven mother doesn't feel so pressured by having to postpone her own projects in favour for kids - it's not that she sees her best years running through er fingers! Not that that would have stopped FΓ«anor.

And you seriously never realised I'm horrible with backgrounds? Yay, then I successfully hid my inability from the world. XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Qitian In reply to Gold-Seven [2012-08-15 07:26:28 +0000 UTC]

I like to imagine that Nerdanel would've put her foot down and demanded some child-rearing support from her husband. "Put down that hammer and play with your son, it's MY time in the forge now!"

You successfull fooled me, at least! Here I always told myself, "Put some more effort into those backgrounds, dammit... like Goldseven does!" My world view, it is crumbling!
