Description Hello guys. Here we have 2 Saiga antelopes (Saiga tatarica). This elusive animal was requested by my good friend Simon. Saigas are a critically endangered species of antelope that are native to the dry steppe grasslands and semi-arid deserts of Central Asia. They're actually 2 subspecies of this antelope. The Russian saiga (S.t.tatarica) inhabits Russia, as its name suggests and 3 areas in Kazakhstan, while the Mongolian saiga (S.t.mongolica) is only confined in a tiny area in western Mongolia. Historically, these animals were once widespread throughout Eurasia, North America and even the British Isles. They're extinct in China, Western Mongolia, Romania, Moldova due to extensive hunting. Social animals, they form very huge herds, grazing on plants, including ones that are deadly to other animals. These animals are known for their extensive migrations to avoid natural calamities. What makes this animal unique among other antelopes is their pair of closely spaced, bloated nostrils that directs downwards. It becomes very useful in the summer to filter out dust kicked by the herd and helps the animal's blood cool. And in the winter, they warm up the freezing air around them before breathing it in. Their coats go through seasonal changes, in which they have a yellow-red coat in the summer and a shaggy pale grayish-brown coat in the winter. Sadly, they're critically endangered due to disease and the desire for their horns, which only males possess. But hopefully, saigas are making a comeback and maybe one day through rewilding efforts, we'll be able to bring back this elusive antelope back to Eurasia, North America and the British Isles and become widespread as it once was.
